...hmm...interesting how you'd refuse to believe exiles (some may call them escapees, whatever), for example, despite not knowing anything about the situation, by your own admission...strikes me more as 'I'll only believe stuff that supports my preexisting expectations!' rather than any serious attempt to uncover anything vaguely resembling truth...don't know how familiar you are with confirmation bias, and the related hostile media phenomenon...
RevLeftByBirth is presumably a joke account mocking certain other defenders of North Korea here. I hope so anyway. What is more worrying are certain other people here who also defend North Korea to one extent or another. In terms of the North Korean Governments policy output, it must be regarded as one of the most right wing Governments in the world.
While the NG account is certainly biased by a cultural supremacist, orientalist viewpoint the problem isn't DPRK's poverty. Rather it's the fact that the North Korean government - an absolute monarchy - hides behind a facade of socialism.
Seriously, Kim has built an entire city as a temple to himself and his father... Sounds comical until you realise it's the people of North Korea who suffered horribly to make it possible.
I've *heard* that this was a prank made by south Korean TV Channel. Again to show how awesome is their "democracy" and how communism sux.
They admited it was prank, but in west they still think its truth.
*offtopic*
Our (national) televizion has sometimes pranks too, and once it was scandal, since neibhor country thought it is true, but it wasn't, and they then started to do pranks just to give it back...
North Korean propaganda sux, Western propaganda is superb! And if you ask me, Western society is more indoctrinated then North Korean one, just in diffrent way, more subtile.
About their economy, during Korean war, their infrastructere was leveld with floor! Not sure if i remeber correctly, more bombs were dropped in the korea then in pacific campagin of WW2! UN-USA even used non-convetional weapons as biological...And they are still under USA embargo...oh no, its in fact under UN, USA, EU EMBARGO.
Oh USA even wanted to use Abomb...once again...oh not one, not sure if my memory serves me right but 63 or 36. What a nice country USA is.
Not to mention that whole thing was perfectly again orchastrated by Capitalists, and in fact North did not attack south, but vice versa.
During Korean conflict whole world (UN) went against Korea, so i totally understand their Attitude towards UN and other west. Like Che said, we must not trust Imperialist, not even a litle bit!
And Gaddafi is paying now high price for trusting them.
*edit:addon:*
And about those so called NGO's entering Korea to help...we all know what are NGO's and who pays them...

I used to think Cuba was a place where everyone was held at gun point and that people will assassinated daily by the government. Anyone could be a spy for the authoritarian government, even your spouse. People told me that everyone was starving and you could see people dying in the streets. The people that told me these stories were Cuban exiles, or refugees as you like to put it. Once I went to Cuba, I saw that they were all lies. That's where my rejection of exiles/refugees' stories come from.
Media will always report in a biased fashion that serves their best interests. It is not in the best interest of bourgeois media to report North Korea as anything acceptable. So why would I believe it?
Lastly, there isn't one truth to be discovered, especially when were looking at a culture and society different from ours.
The devaluation of the human world grows in direct proportion to the increase in value of the world of things. -Karl Marx
Of more value is that you understand and learn to not support your security on your clothes because if you lose everything then what are you left with if all you have is only decorations? What a shame. It surely sounds sad like a condemnation that you base your life on only material shit. Nothing special can be purchased. As the little prince says, “What is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Cultura Profetica [translated by me]
BMW's and palaces, yet terrified escapees and prison labor, from the same country.
You can't really defend that kind of inequality, regardless of political stance.

Link to where it was a prank, and not acual north korean TV. BTW, if you want more insane North Korean propeganda I'm sure we can find plenty.
You brainwashed too ? Did ever occur to you that it might be over-exrated ? That it might be propaganda ? Do you even relize that Western countries do propaganda too ?
Stop trashing DRPK, first look at West and its Propaganda and Its WARS and its Killing people at this moment! At this moment they are killing Libiyans, Afghanistani people, and Yemeni, telling us that they are terrorist and USA is here to save the day...oh and they are doing it for people of USA and world. And what about none-equality in USA and West ? Social security, healthcare ? Do some cleaning at your home before going around. And stop serving Western Capitalist by trashing DRPK, you are just giving them excuse "to go and take down its leader, because democracy is good".
I'm not in mood to search, and i might have been mistaken with some other video, like you said there are plenty more (pranks) videos on internet made by people or japanse channels or south korean (all capitalist, how funny).
If you believe that is not prank and actual TV Broadcasted by North Korean national television, then you are perfect example of Indoctrinated westerner, and perfect example how powerful is subtile Western Propaganda is and how it effects its residents-citizens.
“If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”
I know it was a prank video, but it's the sort of thing you'd expect the DPRK to do, it's kinda similar to one of their propaganda videos I saw in which a news reporter said something along the lines of "Kim Jong-Il is very disappointed with his performance on the nation's newest golf course, he only got 17 hole-in-ones out of 18" (that one was real btw)
Well prove me otherwise, I've seen so many examples of this, unless you prove that they are fakes, then you really have nothing to say about it.
Again, "America does bad things" is not an argument to defend North korea, NO ONE HERE is defending the US, but your defending the North Korean Monarchy.
BTW, democracy is good, if you don't believe that then you don't believe in socialism or communism, and no the US is not a democracy, and by no means is North Korea.
Whoa, reel it in there, friend-o. I can "trash" the DPRK without serving western capitalists.
Of course, propaganda exists in all states, but do yourself a favor, and don't use propaganda as a talking point when trying to defend Kim. When your state is an outcast to the world, every criticism against it can be contrived as "propaganda."
There's no reason to condone the obvious transgressions of a megalomaniac, even if the USA is just as bad.
We should fight human rights abuses ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE and not shelter any one source because it is an "outcast" or an "underdog" or anything like that.
The enemy of your enemy is not always your friend.
No you can't trash DPRK without serving western capitalist. Every action has its reaction, world is connected.
I don't agree we should fight humman rights abusese, we should fight capitalism-impearlialism, and that means fighting USA. Instead of trashing DRPK we could trash a lot more USA and its policy, and beside that, USA and its policy deserves more to be trashed then DRPK. USA as leading capitalist-impearialist country, which is doing more crimes and abuses more humman rights then anyone in the world. USA which makes plans to invade other countries because oil or other resources deserves to be trashed more then DRPK, which is product of USA and other imperalist powers.
The problem is Capitalist-Imperialist, and against them we must fight, we must focus on their crimes and open eyes to the people about their crimes.
“If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”
Of course you wouldn't. You've already decided that, irrespective of what exactly it is they say...assuming that you reject anti-DPRK media as biased, that presumably means that you will only pay attention to pro-DPRK media. And, as you said, "[m]edia will always report in a biased fashion that serves their best interests," and it is in the best interests of pro-DPRK media to...yeah, I think you can finish that one without my help...
Strange that you say that, when you'd only just said that you totally disregard the testimony of Cuban exiles as lies, based on seeing something different. It's almost as if you feel that there is one truth to be discovered, that people can't have different experiences, different interpretations of the situation. That there aren't two sides of a story, multiple alternative truths. For instance, the truth in pro-DPRK media and the truth in anti-DPRK media. Instead, you have decided that there is only one, and you will therefore disregard any conflicting statements as false...seems that my very point, that one shouldn't base one's 'knowledge' of a situation on only one side of the story, but on all possible sides, interpretations and experiences, is somehow being turned back towards me as an argument...almost as if I said "to uncover the one single truth" rather than "to uncover anything vaguely resembling truth"...
This is just one massive tu quoque argument that presumes the people here see this as a conflict between their countries and the Dystopian Republic of North Korea as opposed to being leftists concerned about the plight of the ordinary people of a country that furthrmore claims to be a people's and workers' utopia.

*cough* lolwut?
Yeah understatement of the century.
Want me to write you a book?
What stakes prey tell do the world proletariat have vested in the interests of either the North Korean or Iranian bourgeoisie?
I'm not sure on what post you are reffering...
But whatever i said, it is not "tu quoque"...but i guess this is the easiest way to dissmis my post.
Anways, i'm just pointing out the power of western propaganda machine, which is more powerful, and because its capitalist we should not believe it, and even if it is true, (which i doubt)...Its not guilt of some Kim or someone, but its guilt of USA and other imperialists for the situation there.
“If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”
I'd be embarrassed to write something like that.

Belorussian Organization Hits US for Aggression on DPRK
Pyongyang, August 2 (KCNA) -- The Social Federation "For the Union and Union's Communist Party" of Belarus issued a statement on July 21 to mark the 58th anniversary of the Korean people's victory in the Fatherland Liberation War.
The United States instigated the south Korean puppet forces to ignite a war of aggression on the DPRK on June 25, 1950, the statement said, and went on:
What the U.S. sought was to stifle the DPRK, dominate the whole Korean Peninsula and put the world under its control with the DPRK as a springboard.
But the U.S. could not attain its aims due to the heroic resistance of the Korean people and was compelled to sign the armistice agreement.
The military adventure of the U.S., which inflicted big sacrifice and sufferings on the Koreans, met a disgraceful end on July 27, 1953.
The U.S. is still keeping its troops armed with nukes in south Korea while constantly committing military provocations.
It has also turned aside the just stand of the DPRK for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and its durable peace and independent and peaceful reunification.
The peninsula is becoming an ignition point of a new world war due to the U.S. machinations.
The U.S. is hell-bent on the military intervention in the DPRK and other countries, oblivious of the lesson it drew from the defeat in the Korean War.
On the occasion of the war victory day we reaffirm our invariable support and solidarity with the Korean people.

AND, the material conditions of the working class in the DPRK continues to improve thanks to Kim Jong Il's guidance
Consumer Goods Production Campaign Gains Momentum
Pyongyang, August 2 (KCNA) -- The campaign to produce August 3 consumer goods in the DPRK is paying off profusely in the on-going advance for a great surge in the efforts to build a thriving nation.
Industrial establishments, industrial goods general stores, direct sales stores and other commercial service institutions across the country organized the said consumer goods producing units of various forms including housewives' workteams and reusable goods production workteams in conformity with specific conditions. The number of those units increased to more than 10,000 this year and the ranks of producers more than doubled as compared with that in the same period of last year.
Tellling that you would be embarrassed by a leader who works to provide resources to the working people...
