Considering this is my "specialty," I can talk all night and all day about topics related to this. Dhul, this means that most of your drug talk will somehow find a home here as well. Great! Just putting my cards out on the table for you all so this will become a productive and resourceful thread.

Only one problem: most dopeheads have no idea what those two words mean - lol

We are the informed minority I fear

Alkaloids interest me so much that I decided to take a minor in bio just to have an excuse to study them. That, and the whole escaping from pre-med made it easy to do.
Unfortunately, they involve quite a bit of chemistry (mainly organic, thank god) which gives me a little trouble sometimes...

I like drugs but not those derived from the Poppy, such as heroine, cocaine or morphine. Alkaloids are good fun though.

Ehhh.... cocaine is NOT derived from the poppy. Neither, technically, is heroin.

The major active alkaloids in Papaver Somniferum are Morphine and Codeine. Heroin is an expired trademark that Bayer applied to their brand of diacetylmorphine - it is a semi-synthetic opiod.

Alkaloids are the opposite of acids - inthat alkaloids are basic. But not all bases are alkaloids - if you follow me.

Here is the Merriam Webster definition: "any of numerous usually colorless, complex, and bitter organic bases (as morphine or codeine) containing nitrogen and usually oxygen that occur especially in seed plants"

Did you know that the opium poppy contains over twenty different alkaloids besides the two most useful ones - including papaverine thebaine, and narceine? =D

over twenty is quite a small number, i've heard estimates up in the high 30's. the Poppy is important to this field because I beleive it was the first place that Alkaloids were isolated (by Meissner in the 1820's) and recognized. hypodermic needles were created to potentially reduce the amount of Morphine addictiion when it was used as a painkiller (I can't say that other word, thats why I'm not in Pre-Med no mo&#39. By the beginning of the 20th century, as many as one million people were thought to be Opium Addicts.

I don't know too much about the Alkaloids derived from the Poppy, but I know specifically about Coniine, Atropine (the best&#33 and Strychnine. All the boring ones that won't fuck you up in a fun way.

I heat, knead and flatten the morsel of opium powder until it has the consistency of soft, almost melted caramel, and the rich tawny color of hazelnut. Placed in the pipe and lit, I skillfully suck on the pipe as the opium bubbles, and the delicious perfume of the stuff, more beautiful than that of any garden, flowers unseeable and unknowable, mingles with color turned to scent, hue of tawny hazelnut to aroma of hazelnut roasting.

yeah, my history teacher (A pakistani) was telling me how his mother used to give him the smoke from an opium hookah when he was a baby to pacify him and his brothers and sisters while she went to work.

But I love alkaloids too- they're pretty spicy, I prefer the spearmint to the cinammon. The green one's are interesting, and I collect the tins.

joke.
