Its really not obvious to me that "little baby nothing" is a "feminist" song it actually seems more like a slut-shaming anti-prostitution song.

This song was the feminist anthem of the late 70's/early 80's.

Of more value is that you understand and learn to not support your security on your clothes because if you lose everything then what are you left with if all you have is only decorations? What a shame. It surely sounds sad like a condemnation that you base your life on only material shit. Nothing special can be purchased. woo-hoo! Woman Rock, Too!! Let's not forget Mae Jemison, first black woman in space, 1992!!

The seminal song for the 70's Woman's Liberation Movement.. recorded in 1970. (kind of over the top.. but would be remiss not to include as well as being a huge part of 70's counter culture and my 70's childhood).

Here's a video I've often posted on this site of Peruvian women prisoners from the Popular Women's Movement (a PCP front organization) commemorating International Women's Day. Personally, I think women singing together about how they're going to defeat imperialism and fight for revolution generally fits the revolutionary feminist criteria better than yankee pseudo-feminist pop artists. There's also the question of which is more empowering for women -- "social progress can be measured by the social status of women", "we will defeat evil imperialism!", "our way is armed struggle!" or some pity driven song with a sarcastic edge going "I'm just a girl".

No contest -- (and I didn't know it was!). There is no question-- Your video of the Shining Path woman prisoner's is much much much more empowering, of course, Mosfeld! Thanks for posting!

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh or something, not my intention! I've just been reading/watching lots of bell hooks lately and she always gets me pissed off

Probably the reason why I wrote "yankee pseudo-feminist pop artists"

A "slut-shaming" song is anything but pro-sexual liberation feminist.

It is the movement of people and things that distracts and even consoles, if there is still consolation to be had for one so unhappy. If the leaves of the trees did not move, how sad the trees would be and we too.

good interview of Bell Hooks. She made some interesting points that I agree with.. though I would argue that Madonna was ever a feminist icon. In fact, she has/and is.. but it's completely unwarranted. Madonna's gig was that she tried to be provocative but it was always in, at least to me, an anti-feminist way. I am sure many would vehemently disagree with that. I would present a longer critique, having witnessed her career from the beginning.. but I'll spare you all...

I dreamt of a flower that was so beautiful that when it whithered away and died a tear left my eye. I saw our births, our lives and our deaths. I felt fire paint me with pain and I felt a kiss on my lips with a knife in my neck. Love to heartbreak to self-destruction to birth and to finally learning to frolic back into the same trap with a warm smile.

the lyrics to that godawful song...musically that is...

No one likes looking at you
Your lack of ego offends male mentality
    They need your innocence
To steal vacant love and to destroy
Your beauty and virginity used like toys

My mind is dead, everybody loves me
    Wants a slice of me
    Hopelessly passive and compatible
Need to belong, oh the roads are scarey
So hold me in your arms
I wanna be your only possession

    Used, used, used by men

All they leave behind is money
Paper made out of broken twisted trees
    Your pretty face offends
Because it's something real that I can't touch
Eyes, skin, bone, contour, language as a flower

No god reached me, faded films and loving books
    Black and white TV
All the world does not exist for me
And if I'm starving, you can feed me lollipops
    Your diet will crush me
My life just an old man's memory

    Little baby nothing
    Loveless slavery, lips kissing empty
    Dress your life in loathing
Breaking your mind with Barbie Doll futility

    Little baby nothing
    Sexually free, made-up to breakup
    Assassinated beauty
Moths broken up, quenched at last
The vermin allowed a thought to pass them by

You are pure, you are snow
We are the useless sluts that they mould
Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
    Culture, alienation, boredom and despair
