Well, you can't actually make politics without incurring in some risks. This is valid to the far right as much as it is to the left or the centre.

What's probably equally disgusting is that the person concerned has been arrested. Stupid and bigoted they may be to burn the Koran, but it's dangerous for the state to be able to prosecute people for acts that they've committed in their own homes (in this case in his back garden) without any possibility of immanent danger. It is of course also the bourgeois state that imprisons asylum seekers and uses immigration controls, not rather irrelevant organizations like the BNP and EDL.
Ok....so...everybody is focussing on the Quaran burning. Guy is an idiot, biggot and racist.
but did everybody miss this part:
So what? The act was offensive you might say. Yes it was.
Who cares? The guy is a racist idiot, a fascist scum. Yes he is.
The motivation behind it can not be defended.
But getting arrested for it?
The finer point here is twofold:
1). The law now ascribes higher power to a religious book. Anybody burning that specific book is now allegeable for arrest. You bought the book or acquired it...it is now your property and you can do with it what you want does not apply anymore.
No matter what your motivation...you are being arrested because of fear how others may react to your actions...
2). It singles out a specific book. Not just any book. If you burn the Bible...you do not get arrested. If you burn the Thora...you do not get arrested. If you burn TLOTR or Harry Potter...you do not get arrested. Yet you do get arrested for burning this specific book.
Again...not because of the holy status of the book. The Bible is just as holy. But because of fear of how others may react to your actions.
Both these points boil down simply to the fact that when it comes to Muslim community in the eyes of the establishment you simply can not treat them the same way or expect them to be treated the same way as other people and religions. Now...this is NOT my opinion. Its the implication of the actions of the police. Its the implication of the words of the politicians.
This is inherrently racist motivated implementation of the law. NOT because we want to protect Muslims the same way we want to protect others...but because of the fear we have of how they react.
Before you get outraged...read on...because the arguments clearly show this:
Well...we aren't really that tollerant now are we. Because all of the sudden burning a book is a criminal offence. NOT the motivation behind the burning of the Quaran. But the very act itself. Now...I can vaguely understand that argument with the movements against Islam becomming very, very popular (on of the reasons because the Islam is considered to be intolerant of criticism by the supporters of these groups).
But NOT in the light of the other statement they made:
But we allow a party as the BNP and EDL to function legally within the political framework? A party which in its very politics advocates the creation of devisions and who are actually working to target specific groups because of their group characteristics.
So this comes off as hypocritical and untrue.
We have now established that protecting the muslim community is NOT the real motivation...fear however is. And that is appaling.
Now...it also does something else. Something which many will differ of opinion with me....but is non the less true.
It also means that freedom of speech and expression which we uphold in the face of christianity, judaism and many other religions, political parties and other issues...is suspended when it comes to Islam.
We have double standards here.
We now use the law to not...protect Islam from persecution. But we apply it so that we do not have to worry about the outrage and the possible responses within and outside our countries.
It grants a privilege which inherrently surpasses the privileges by law we grant other religions. But it incidentally also completely glosses over the fact that apparantly we fear that groups of Muslims will not be tolerant to freedom of expression and speech. Instead we prevent the acts to gloss over the fact that sometimes...burning a book, drawing a cartoon is not accepted and will illicit violence. It in effects justifies the use of violence against free speech and expression...after all...free speech and expression are curbed because we fear violent reaction.
The case can and will be made that the burning of the book was not the issue. It was the motivation...the idea of inciting hatred....if that is the case...I will refer back to the argument I gave above. Why then do we allow parties and groups to function legally within society which clearly aim to do this?
Now...in some cases...yes...this whole line of reasoning is completely justified. BUT ITS A GODDAMN BOOK. I do not care if you worship the book. THAT is your problem. But you force me to accept your book needs to have special status...because you believe in it THAT is unjustifiable.
This eventually leads to a whole different problem....the law protecting religion as an institution.
Now...I completely reject any legal protection for any religion. Burning a Quaran may be considered offensive by some followers of Islam. But IMO the whole religion is offensive...not because it is Mulsim...but because it is religion and in its very essence condems and devides people. Nobody is protecting anybody from that....and since I fight against religion...I also reject any special treatment for religion.
Now...individuals...yes...they need protection. If they are targetted because of their religion tahts bad. But this specific act is not targetting induviduals...its targetting the religion itself.
when it comes to this guy...he is a fucking nutjob. He needs to be removed from society. But not because he burned a book....but because he is a fascist, racist biggot and his views can not be tolerated or allowed to participate in politics.
================================================== =======
Now...to make a disclaimer...because I understand this is a sensitive issue....and my words may easilly be misunderstood as a justification for the BNP, for acts against Muslims or racism and biggotry.
It is not.
Its the principle of the matter. Laws protecting religion as an institution should be banned. People should not get arrested for burning a book. And the whole justification given by the politicians is bullshit to te extreme and racist in its origins.

Ah, so in fact they have attained (one of) their objective(s).
