When discussing matters with democratic socialists and social democrats the main split has always surrounded one thing: the capitalist mode of production. [New School] Social Democrats believe in private ownership of the means of production and welfare state capitalism, whereas democratic socialists (usually hiding as 'liberals') speak of socializing industry and allowing an elite class of political bureaucrats to manage the economy. They say things like this:
'And, guess what this liberal will be all about? This liberal will be about socializing… uh, will be about, basically taking over and the government running all of your companies.'
-Maxine Waters
The CCCP showed us that such a system gives rise to a new ruling class that's just as bad as, if not worse, than the capitalists. Indeed, any system that concentrates control or authority in a few hands quickly becomes an oligarchy, as they quickly seek to ensure they keep their newfound control. History has seen this time and again. It is why revolutions so often lead to regime changes rather than meaningful changes to the social system and the condition of the common man.

You'd be the first I've heard advocate anything different. Indeed, this basic difference and very criticism (rooted, as it is, in the arguments of Shachtman) seems to be the major reason the social democrats split from the democratic socialists in the first place.
