wow, now that IS weird, the only people who have posted on this thread so far are all guests....

I have read parts of Das Kapital, and i have read the manifesto. I cannot afford a copy of Das kapital, and my local library doesnt have it.
I have, however, read books which interpret marxism and interpret marx's works synoptically. Also i found a good book is Marxism After Marx. Very good book.

I am, however, not a marxist. I follow my own personal beleifs, which just happen to broadly agree with Marxism. The foundations of my beleifs had been laid out before i even knew what Communism and marxism were, and i was quite surprised i was a Communist...
I do not follow a doctrine though..
And you cannot judge a person's ideological worthiness by what they have read, spending time questioning things is probably a much more worthwhile way of developing ideas...

People can read Marx and still agree with him?

Shit. You learn something new every day.

This is the kind of commentary that creates the situations that you keep asking "How is it my fault".

It's very possible to agree with Marx. Quite a few people do in fact!

As for me, I've yet to read a word of Marx. So, in that sense, I'm not a Marxist. It's very difficult to define my political idealogy because it's everywhere.

Marx, Lenin, Engels, Bakunin they are all great. Read 'em, loved 'em. Haven't read Das Kapital yet. School texts seem to take up a little too much time for something that heavy. However, from articles I have read, and things that my instructors have explained about it, I can't wait to read it.

i wouldnt consider myself a marxist's although like commie said, alot of my views agree with marx'. ive read communist manifesto which i think was brilliant, ive also skimmed thru Capital, alot of it is a dry read and is sometimes difficult to get thru. Ive also read selected passages from various writings of his in sociology books. I mainly read alot of Che, Martin Luther King is a personal favorite, he is one of the greatest minds ever i believe, find it unreal that him and che died at 39. Malcolm x is also enjoyable, black panther writing is great, chomsky, pretty much any writer who is looking for freedom and justice. peace

what is a marxist? someone how defends the model of society that he presented in his philosofical works? i think that is the defenition i would chose.

With that in mind, and having sayed that i am in the process of reading marx`s das kapital (volume 1 half way through) , i must say that i cant seriously call my self a marxist without sounding childish. I think that before you defend this or that social model or economic threorys, plans of action, reformes, changes, etc... U must be well informed. Well informed about marx`s works, other works, study the sbject and hear other views, discus learn and dont be just be quick to say im this or that, because above what you must be is informed and have your own ideas. From them you chose your political field and activism (or not), but respecting others in democracy and humanistic values.
this is what i am, a person interested in taking a part in the construction of the society around me, as for my views you must ask me especific questions and i will answer them if feel i am able too. I agree with no man on everything.

Economists have provided capitalists with a comforting concept called the "free market." It does not describe any part of reality, at any place or time. It's a mantra conveniently invoked when it is proposed that government do something the faithful don't like, and just as conveniently ignored whenever they want government to do something for them.

Well I cannot say i am REALLY a marxist, for i am not. I have my own beliefs. I believe Che was a man like no other, yet i do not agree with everything he did. On the other hand, Castro is a power-hungry murderer. If Castro hadnt helped murder Che, and Che was still around today, Cuba would be a totally different nation. I doubt many of you agree, but guess what? Thats the beauty of intelligence =).

    DaNatural,

You can always take advantage of the school's printers. Or the library's.

    Guest,

You don't back up your statement. A lot has been written about Che's death, so your self-congratulating remark about your intelligence is meaningless. As I undestand it, Che was murdered in Bolivia under the direction of the CIA, not Castro. Back it up or be quiet, please.

If you agreed in any mild way with any of the principles of Che or any other communists, then you would not:
    a. make suppositions about other people's intelligence relative to yours.
OR b. If you thought yourself more intelligent, consider yourself superior for that intelligence.

I think what that guest meant by implicating fidel in che's death was that Castro did not aid him. As a matter of fact if you read companero by jorge castaneda, the CCCP actively discouraged that any CP in Latin America, namely those of chile and Peru, aid Che, or help him escape. Furthermore the CIA did not want CHE dead, they wanted him captured, the decision to execute him was made by officials in the Bolivan Army.

I am sure that if the CIA wanted him alive they would have prevented his death. Afterall, they were there at the time. They could have made sure that the Bolivians understood that they wanted him alive.
