It is with deep consideration and reflection that I have come to endorse the following statement made by the Socialist Party USA:

The Socialist Party USA rejects calls for war and calls upon American citizens to wage peace.
We condemn the mass murder that occurred on September 11, as we condemn all murder. We fully understand the desire for retribution in response, but do not share it. We insist that the perpetrators of these terrorist acts should be brought to justice without plunging this country and the world into a wider war.

We specifically condemn President Bush's vow to make no distinction between the terrorists and the countries in which they might live. The deaths of thousands of people whose only crime was to show up for work illuminates just how much our government's policies abroad imperil all of us, personally, on a daily basis. Bush's policy of waging "war on terrorism" is itself terroristic, and simply invites more terrorism.

We need a foreign policy free of military intervention, based upon
international cooperation. The Socialist Party calls upon peace loving citizens to set an example by joining broad based, multi-ethnic coalitions to speak out and defend against anti immigrant fever in our communities, to support the relief effort in New York and Washington and to take a stand against military action.

Yes... I explained much of how I had been wavering on this issue under the thread "Anti Americanism makes the left go blind" I'm still however not clear on what should be done, but can't support militery action since the main reason I had supported it in the first place was outrage and blind thirst for revenge that lead me to the belief that there just isn't any other way.

By the way.... is that the crest of Australia you have?

military retaliation will create exactly the same conditions under which this whole situation has arisen all over again. it might satisfy the american public's blood lust but it will solve nothing in the long run. the priority is in finding lasting solutions which will ensure that this never, ever happens again, not revenge.

yes gooddoctor, that's what my thinking is at this point. Of course a theat of miltery action may be efective in itself, I think the US is being unresonable in rejecting the Afgani Clerics' atempt to 'ask' Bin Laden to leave. The US clames this is simply an attempt to move him from one safe haven to another... yet with the present pressure from the international community he would be hard pressed to find another.

Another thought is what will happen if they do get him? I know 'hang 'em high' Bush will press for an execution, however I'm sure that European nations that reject capital punishment will protest that.

The statement is admirable and I agree with its sentiment entirely, but it does suffer from the absence of an alternative.

Drifter - how patriotic of you to have a coat of arms.
It cannot but be supportive, socialist, communist or whatever you want to call it. Does nature, and the human species with it, have much time left to survive in the absence of such change? Very little time. Who will be the builders of that new world? The
