One of the worst things to come out of the Viet-Nam war was how the US govt. mistreated it's vets after the war.
Bush is saying alot of things right now to try and rally the people's support for a war. For those who have parents or relitives who where Viet Nam vets they remember the govt's past mistreatment... people suffering from agent orange which was ignored by the Government... people who spent years in the bush only to come back having no skills except killing Viet Kong ended up taking the lowest jobs, or ended up homeless. A large part of the homeless population in NYC still consists of VFW's.
So if they are serious in getting support for a war they should be serious about fair treatment of the Vets that return home!
I think they should retain the medical/dental/and medicine coverage that they had while enlisted. They should be garenteed jobs with livable income. The present system which has a vet's branch in the dept. of labor is faulty... I tried it out when I got out of the Navy... and the jobs they offered me where unskilled low wage jobs... and I had training when in the service!
The vet's home loan program garentees a low interest, however minorities are still subject to the same dicrimination as recieved if they where not even a vet. They should protect them from red lines and preditory loans that prey on minorities and the uneducated.
They should be given the same retirement benifits as if they served 20 years in the reserves... why should people who do one weekend a month for 20 years get 30% base pay and VFW's get nothing?
VFW's should be required to see a councler for a set period that will help them ajust to civilian life and monetor any signs of phycological or medical illness caused by long term combat.
In truth... to get any of this done the militery needs to be unionized... or in the very least VFW's.
