Default General Strike in Europe Sept 29th

The European Confederation of Trade Unions has called for an international day of action against government austerity measures at the upcoming meeting of European Finance Ministers in Brussels, September 29th. Major unions in Spain, and other radicals throughout Europe are calling for a general strike. Such an international action by labor is unprecedented, yet it seems nobody in the United States is paying attention.

Budget cuts and austerity measures for working people, while governments continue to bail out banks, transnational corporations, and the super-rich is not a coincidence. Global capitalism has more sway than our supposed democracies. We must see these attacks from an international perspective and unite to fight for a real alternative.

Does anyone know of groups that are organizing for September 29th in the US? Is there a website keeping track of the protests and calls to strike around the world?

In Spain the Workers Commissions (Communist-influenced mainstream union) has called for a Sept 29th general strike. The two anarcho-syndicalist unions (CNT and CGT) had been agitating for a general strike for a longer period of time and have jumped on board the Sept 29th date.

if you read Spanish here's the report from the CGT on their informing the Ministry of Labor of intent to convoke a general strike throughout the Spanish state:

    http://www.cgt.org.es/spip.php?article1863

The Spanish government is responding to pressures from the EU governments and central banks, demanding austerity. So the CGT is also in the midst of a "march on Brusselles", currently wending its way through France.

I am most definitely in favour of such a brilliant move! Too long was the workers' movement confined to the narrow shackles of the obsolete "nation-state", while the corporations used the benefits of transnational connections to further their goals! It is high time workers' and socialist organization adopted more Transnationalist approach, so to speak, to be on equal footing with their foes.

apart from the fact that I have no idea what you just said,

the CNT has more revolutionary credentials than most of the unions in the world. For instance, look at its record. Anarchist Catalonia was kind of a big deal, remember? I'm not going to go into too much detail because I'm sure everyone here already knows what the rest of the story is.

Really, as dozens of Spanish Civil War threads scattered here and there show, everybody knows what their story is.

The Socialist Party USA - Boston Local, and the Industrial Workers of the World - Boston General Membership Branch, are both calling for a protest on September 29th at noon in front of the Massachusetts state house against austerity and in solidarity with the European strike. Also, the IWW International Solidarity Commission has contacts with the CGT in Spain. I hope that we can organize actions throughout the United States and compile reports on those actions for our allies in Europe. Also, we should bring the message of international solidarity and the struggle against capitalism to the "One Nation" rally in Washington DC on October 2nd. Even though the Oct 2nd rally is being organized by Democrats, there will be hundreds of thousands of working people there who ought to be hungry for a more radical message.

ONE general strike in Spain. That's about it. But there were protests all over the place in Europe, complete with riot cops.

Other than the BBC, nobody is talking about this at all. But BBC alone has 3 stories about it. But there were protests in all the places we expected there to be. I don't want to sound like a defeatist but really. This was supposed to be a general strike across Europe, not a goddamn friendly chat.
