Women's Commission Statement on WTC, Pentagon
9/12/01
Susan Dorazio, Convener of Women's Commission
On behalf of the women's commission of the Socialist Party-USA, I would like to add another factor to the list of causes and implications of yesterday's terrible events in New York City and Washington, D.C.: the oppression of women.
We live in a world comprised of countries and societies largely hostile to, or disregarding of, the needs and rights of their female citizens. Women throughout the world are increasingly impoverished, exploited, abused, ill-housed, poorly educated, and denied the necessary range of health care and child care services. Frequently women's very thoughts, feelings, and ideas are ignored by those who profit, financially or otherwise, from gender inequality and injustice. This situation, exacerbated in a period of worldwide recession, is seriously destabilizing already tenuous relationships with friends, family, co-workers, and the many others with whom we share the earth. Terrorism is working on many levels to debilitate us individually and collectively.

In this time of sadness and confusion, we must confront the dire
circumstances which continually face the most oppressed members of our world community- predominantly women and children- and which contribute so significantly to the types of violence we are currently experiencing. We need to speak and act unflinchingly for the creation of a compassionate and just society based on the economic, social, and political principles of democratic socialism.

With the world under seige from the effects of global capitalism and
patriarchy, the voices of socialist women will be raised, and they must be heard.
