Another truly sad day for the world. Ahmad Shah Masood was the chance for the incredibly oppressive Taliban to be destroyed and a new Afghani government, and not some puppet western government, to be put in power. May his dream for liberation someday be realized for not only his country, but the entire world.

you are correct. there is a small strip in the north that they don't control. however that may change now. also the situation of women is not ging to improve (this is one of the worst countries for the lack of women's human rights), the situation that is arising between afghanistan and the US is not going to be ended diplomatically at all.
i fear for what the future of afghanastan is

I found on CIA world factbook it said the Taliban started as a "Students Union." I never knew students could be that dangerous.

students can be extremely dangerous. students generally are educated and therefore extremely powerful (especially in a country such as afghanistan where it is not easy to be educated). students are often the ones that make change. i think its also an age thing. even today as you watch the protests against the wto and imf etc, most of the protestors are student age ---18-27.
