I recently met a girl who seems to be the biggest biggot I've ever met. Her claim is that she was not always like this but was jumped by a "200 lbs black chick" and now mistrusts anyone darker than her, and comes out with some of the most disgusting racist remarks... " 40 acers and a mule? You should get six feet and bars. "

But my question is... do you think someone who is "normal" can become a biggot just like that... or do you think they must have had it in them... possibly from the way their parents where... this girl for example has a father that would make Archie Bunker blush.

Very tough question. To be honest, I think that someone "normal" with regard to their beliefs about race could become a racist like that overnight, but if they already didn't have it in them beforehand, they must have some mental issues like a tendency to make outrageous generalizations such as this girl did.

I think we are all capable of racism though not all of us express it. Racism is illogical. Were not the first people black people? Some of us just went north and got white.
Race differentiation is not evolution but adaptation towards climatic conditions. We all still have the same DNA and genetic material.

Racism is a disease that infects the minds of the ignorant. How can someone hate, distrust, or look down upon an entire race of people based solely on the judgment of a few? It makes no sense. Yes there are differences between races, but we all breath the same air. I don't think someone can become racist over night. The notion must be in their mind to start, possibly from their upbringing. It is simply a matter of their immunity to the disease.

i think that racism is largely if not entirely based on fear. under that belief yes i think someone can become racist overnite. i for one really distrusted men for quite a while after i was raped but i am strong, i overcame that distrust. some people can't get over their fear and that's why they remain racists.

and that's my 2 cents on this issue

Interesting post I must say this one is (actually most of them are). Is there not a sexual element toward bigotry? Say for instance that you're attracted to someone and all of a sudden you see the object of your affection fall head over heels for someone of another race. Would that make a person a bigot for the rest of their life? I know that white men fear Black men because of their alleged sexual prowress. What do you all think?

White men fear black men because of their alleged sexual prowress? You say that as fact? You might. but I certainly do not. Sounds like a personal problem, Myrimidon of Che.

Some people are racist because they view Blacks as sexual rivals. I'm not one of them. Believe it or not. I don't give a damn.

i believe that prejudice is something that we all have the capacity for, it just depends on what we do about it and how we deal with it. let me give an example:

suppose you (as an unprejudiced individual who has never seen a black man) are walking down the street minding your own business when all of a sudden a big black man jumps out in front of you with a knife and wants your wallet. you give it to him and are traumitized by the experience. (remember this is the first time you have seen a black man) then a few weeks later you walk down a similar street and another black man does the same thing. after this second experience you will start to think that all black men are dishonest thieves. afterall everyone you've met so far has tried to rob you. if you don't think about it, you may go on thinking this way and let it build in your mind until you really believe it (plus you have "proof" ).

the alternative is that you think about what happened. you might come to the conclusion that the reason you were mugged was because you were walking down a very poor and uneducated neighborhood. (not to say that poor and uneducated people are bad, but certainly the percentage of these things are higher in these neighborhoods). furthermore you can conclude that since african americans have always been held down in this society, the chances of a black man living in a poor neighborhood are higher than the chances of a white man. hence i think racism is a result of ignorance (which in the above situation=never having met a black man and not knowing what black people have gone through), assumptions (assuming all black men mug becasue the ones you have met did as in the example), and in jumping to conclusions (not being willing to think about what happened and concluding that all black men are bad).

-p.s.- if you let negative thoughts towards a people stay in your brain, you will constantly be looking for the negative and will ignore the good

There where some good points raised here... I think I agree with PCE the most on this. Nickadermus raised a good point, and I suppose there is a fine line between mistrust and hate. I lived in a fairly violent prodomently black and Purto Rican town for awile when I was a kid. Once I was jumped by this Purto Rican guy and for awile I suppose I mistrusted him and his friends... however I had friends of my own who where black (African American to be PC) and Purto Rican so I suppose The race thing didn't affect me as much there.

In a way racism and sexism can be both linked to the same root cause for both are reactions to fear. When we fear something in such a great manner I suppose that fear can be turned into hate as a defence.

I can't talk in any great deapth on rape for I don't have first hand knowledge about it as Nickadermus unfortionatly has... I believe it is about power and not about sex... and in that sence, aren't the men that commit these acts reacting to fear? Fear of being powerless?

Why are you talking strictly in terms of whites being racist towards blacks. There are many blacks who are racist against whites. They have a real hatred for the wrongs that have been done to them in the past as well as wrongs done in the present.

guest you are right. however the wrongs against blacks are far exceeding that against whites, this is why racism against blacks pop into people's heads first. furthermore, racism on the part of blacks against whites is caused by racism against blacks.

anyways, you can replace "black man" with "white man" and the other way 'round. though it doesn't make a difference. that's besides the point. we are talking about racism.

Red Celtic, men fear being powerless? I wouldn't say that in a room full of women if I were you. Women have always been in the position of powerlessness. Even in the US they were last to be given the right to vote, right after men of any given color.

It's true that rape is not about sex, but about power. But I don't think it is the fear of being powerless that motivates these scums of society to rape. It is the power to exert power which is the reason they do it. It is a "how dare you think you are equal to me you little *****" which makes people rape. And somebody said here that rape is very common. It is. I don't know one women that has not had an experience of being cohersed against her will into have sex. It is a kind of rape by agreement so that it does not turn violent. When someone can dominate you by physical strenght that is powerlessness.

is anti semitism racsim or prejudism if you decide that it is racism then we are all racists for being prejudice towards peoples beliefs for example the dislike of christianity makes you prejudice towards christians which is no different to hating jews and we all dislike the right wing which is again peoples beliefs. so i would say that wether you are a racist depends on where you stand with whats racist and whats prejudice. also racism is actually the oppression of blacks by the white man that is the historical definition of racism which makes black people who dislike whites mearly prejudice and also the fact that the tension was cuased by white man so the black man is mearly retaliating this is purely in historical terms mind

I'm a christian but some christians make me physically sick like www.somethingawful.com/edbaker who promotes anti-sematism and places himself on a pedestal to give him an air on invincibility even when his reasoning is falling apart left right and center.

Infact i urge people to email him saying we do NOT tolerate nazism anywhere on the internet.
