I'm not too familiar with his work, but Chomsky has said favorable things about him in the past.

It strikes me as another offshoot of classical liberalism (the other two being right-wing economics and socialism), but one which is much more closely grounded in praxis and less enamored with the broader philosophical tradition.
I think Cornell West of all people is considered "the" living protege/leader of the pragmatist academic, although I could be wrong. Certainly Dewey comes from that generation of home grown idiosyncratic american philosophers, including the likes of George Santayana and even William James, so he is not easily boxed in any other philosophical or even political movement. I personally do not find early American pragmatism terribly deep and it seems to skirt the traditional "big questions" of philosophy.
