I just wanted to get some feedback from my leftist bretheren on this message board about what their opinions are of the UN. I am curious because I am interested in going into some field related to diplomacy. I will be entering my freshman year in college at UCLA(much revolutionary suport there) and I plan on double- majoring in International Relations and International Economics. Ironically enough, I came into college as almost a junior with all the college courses I took while in high school, so I should be looking at graduate school in about 3 years. Well, enough mindless babbling about myself, I would like as many opinions and recommendations as possible to clarify if I could possibly make a difference to uplift these suppresed and economically suffocating nations of the world if I went into some kind of career related with the UN.

first of all you should know that you can't even do an internship with the UN until you've finished your masters (just FYI)

I personally think that in many many ways the UN is simply a pawn of the United states and the other 'powers'. It is a joke with the ability of the large powers to veto the voices of others. for example, whenever the issue of tibet is raised, china vetos even discussing tibet. that is ridiculous. how are the weaker nations able to be protected? how are they able to standup and speak from themselves? also look at the situation the UN is causing in Iraq

having said that, the idea of the UN is good, unfortunately, its not going to well right now

The UN have no power, if one of the permanant powers aren't happen with one of the course of the debate or the topic they can veto it and stop it. For example every two years a vote is passed over whether the blockade on cuba should be lifted. Out of all the countries that are in the assembly 87% voted that it should be lifted, (only three countrie, America, Israel and the Marshall Islands voted for it to remain). There were also many abstainsions mainly because they rely heavily on America's money for their economy so they did not want to jeopodise their relationship. America still took no notcie of what the UN said and they are supposed to enforce its will throughout the world. What kind of example is this to set when the will not change their own ways and they expect others to? No country should have the right to veto freedom of speech in a peaceful debate between countries. The UN is just another example of American influence meddling in areas that should be left well alone.

The UN is an impotent cock that protects it's third world countries like a condem with a gaping hole in it. Let's face it, it's on it's last breath and is in desperate need of a shot of viagra.

yes the un is practically run by the united states and that is the major problem with the un. if the veto powers of the us, china etc were removed, the un might actually be somewhat useful
if you are interested in international bodies etc checked out the info on the web regarding the ICC (the international criminal court) which isn't in existence yet but is getting closer and closer
