i personally am not an advocate of nationalism. i think its blindly following something that you don't reallly know (and no i'm not including religion as this because i believe you can know religion). nationalism has lead to as many horrors as some religion has. nationalism is just another means of separating humans.

While I think it's important for one to keep in touch with their cultural roots, and history, I think nationalism is a disease. It seems that workers and unions only become enraged about workers rights in other nations when it affects them... when they think they are taking jobs away from them. I think this is a mistake. I think a true socialist movement is one without bounderies... one that rises not just to liberate one state, but to liberate all the workers. On one hand Nationalism personifies people who say, " My countery love it or leave it... if you don't agree with the Government and are proud to be an American the get the [email protected]#K out. " and on the other hand... you have people who say, " why do I care what's hapening on other counteries... why should we help them? It doesn't affect my life.. " But I also don't think we should become identityless and loose touch with our culture. Personaly my American roots go back as far as the 1920's... and before that my family came from Scotland and Ireland. I suppose in a way I'm proud of my history, of the struggle my family went through so I could be here today. And I throw the term "Irish-American" around to discribe myself. But in truth my alegence is primaraly to the human race.

i agree with redceltic in the sense that we should be proud of our cultural heritage. i'm italian and scottish and i am very proud of that. however, i'm not going to accept everthing the canadian/italian/or scottish gov't does.

something i'd like to add... how can we be "nationalists" when we all come from such a wide variety of backgrounds like nickademus does?

exactly pce . . . nationalism is only a symbol of where one lives at the moment. how many people have lived in numerous countries? nationalism, is a silly thing to follow blindly.

In America... expecaly New York, there are many diffrent ethnic groups. There are some who consider that their ethnic group is the greatest... and look down on people from other groups. This isn't something inherent only in the poor white trash in the trailer parks of the deep south. This is something that can be found in practicly every ethnic group and on every street corner. I view this as a form of nationalism.

While I am proud of my Celtic blood, I don't think it has any qualities that differ from any other kind of blood... maybe our bones make better fertlizer for potato fields.. but that's about it..

Nationalism has worked for some good in the past. Strong Nationalism has helped to destroy colonialism in Asia and Africa. But once the independedt government is established, Nationalism could lead to Fascism. I know that liberals supported nationalism in the 1800's because it was pride for the nation but hate for the government (Which back then was mostly aristocratic). I could understand people in places such as Guam and Puerto Rico being nationalist and wanting to free themselves from the US.

First, just a quick answer to the question about nationalism. I think that it's a terrible thing, myself. It sets up false boundaries between people that serve no purpose other than to strengthen the State. I live in the US, but US workers are no more important to me than those in any other area of the world.

Now then, about Marx. I'm not familiar with his stance on Polish nationalism, but I can say that Marx supported some things that wouldn't be expected. For example, he supported free trade. He did not think that it would help workers, but he felt that it would quicken the spread of capitalism and therefore the end of capitalism. He also supported British colonialism in India, because he believed that it would increase India's industrial base which is a neceassary precursor to a socialist society. Marx took the long view pretty much all the time in these situations.

    vox
Economists have provided capitalists with a comforting concept called the "free market." It does not describe any part of reality, at any place or time. It's a mantra conveniently invoked when it is proposed that government do something the faithful don't like, and just as conveniently ignored whenever they want government to do something for them.

hello again I have to be the one to tell everybody that nationalism doesnt have to bee facist or make such boundaries that you all talk about, let me ask you something, all off you are problaby agaist the globalization tha its going on , yes its problaby because we all know that its a capitalistic and discriminating way off glovalization, but wen we speak about anarchy, communism, and socialism, arent we talking about globalization??? yes but you might say that youre right because ist the best for the workers and the social movement, but not allways whats good for one its good for the other, especialy when we have different cultures ,etc.. so nationalism left wing off course its a way off starting to make concience on our people abaut the socialism, comunism, and all the ideas that so many people died for including CHE GUEVARA, those ideas if only one small coutry our region are put in to work, it woulk we a win in this war against capitalism, facism, and imperialism, but we dont put borders we just defend our ideas and teach our people to fight for their rights, in their lands that are the closest thing they have...well thats my opinion ....salud compañeros

Nationalist are often narcissistic, red-neck xenophobes.

There is a stark difference between a nationalist and a patriot. A nationalist is someone who talks about self-sacrifice for his country, a patriot is someone who is willing to die for it. Spot the difference.

While I am definitely my cutural identity and heritage I oppose Nationalism as nnationalism is completely oppositionalto Marxism.

As marxists we recognize that common interest exists most significantly between members of the proleatariat regardless of borders.

It is nationalism whic is used to falsely feed the proletariat with the idea that they have somethig to defend anfd protect.

I live in the UK, which seems to me a parciluarly nationalist country. I am not worried about it most of the time, if it is just about supporting a soccer team, or being proud of herritage and english nuances. what never ceases to piss me off is the xenophobic, stupid attitude of some brits. Particuarly in their ridiculous apathy. There is a culture of NIMBY (not in my backyard) which always seems to go unchecked. It frustrates me emensly that these nationalists don't give a damn about the rest of the world, the poverty, the viloence and human rights violations, but when someone robs a house in their neighboorhood, or they find out their neighbour is taking drugs, suddenly it is a different matter. The stupid brits who moan about the government paying too much attention to other countries where people are dying really pisses me off. There are many great unfair things in this world, I just wish they had a sense of proportion. Don't get me wrong, I don't think our government is any good, or that capitalism is any way to live. we have a thing about immigrants too....I don't personally, but I have heard people goin on about things like "send them back to their own country" and "they take all our jobs." Thats the kind of hatred a mixture of nationalism and capitalism seem to bring - seems to divide people that are no different to each other.

I agree with you completely, RedCeltic. Being proud of your roots is OK, but as soon as you start looking down on others, everything goes downhill. Nationalism is my opinion is a dangerous and tricky thing... It can motivate people to liberate themselves, but can divide people and cause horrible disputes, like racism. I know what you mean, Marxistdisciple, when you complain about people who think we shouldn't care about other countries... I don't know exactly how bad it is in the UK, but it's awful here in the US. I wish that people would just get over their differences and work together.

One should be proud of one's country, but should also be able to know when it is wrong.Nationalism isn't a disease but something that has been warped and corrupted to blame someone else for society's downfall.

I am a Puerto Rican nationalist. I believe there are pros and cons of nationalism and what not to do with nationalism.

I believe that nationalism can be healthy for a people. To have pride in their nation or colonized region, in their culture, language, and people. It keeps their culture alive and away globalization and struggles against colonization. Still I don't believe that with nationalism, there should be a feeling that you are better that any other people. Simple pride of who you are is good, but that pride should not be the catalyst of a superiority complex or a persuit of imperialism in the name of country or God(s).

I think that nationalism is bullshit. Why should you be proud of "your" country, the place where you just so happened to be born? No one has any control over where they're born and because you're born into a wealthy country doesn't mean you DESERVE it.

Countries and Patriotic pride divide people a lot. Wouldn't it be wondeful if people had free range to go and try living in a different area of the world? Instead of being cut off at border crossings etc.?

When you're living in a wealthy country, and people around the world are suffering, I don't think it's right to say "well, we have some problems in our country too" so instead of helping people who are suffering most they help better-off people in their own country.

    maxfish17,

I somewhat agree, but that is the kind of "nationalism" I disregard as a senseless superiority complex. Pride in ones homeland can lead to improvements into the society, or lack of it can lead to it's destruction, such as in Puerto Rico or Japan.

It also can release the struggles of colonialization, such as in Korea, East Timor, and India. It also has contributed to problems in the world, but nationalism is alive and can't be stopped. That could lead to the desturction of cultures, which globalization is doing.

Still the kind of "nationalism" that allows a people to think they are better than any other nations or coutnries which could lead to the not caring for the outside world, is the type that is not acceptible in my eyes.

Well it depends. Maybe, because of my bad experience with nationalism (I am living in Bosnia), I cannot say anything good about it. At least not from my perspective. Maybe, in your case Borincano, nationalism is good. I don't know. What I know is that in my country, or in my region, in the Balkans, it is very unpopular to be nationalist. All nationalist I know, from this region, are extremists who define nationality as hate or dislike towards the other nationalities.
Anyway, it is easier to be nationalist in homogenous country while to be nationalist in heterogeneous country is very dangerous.
