    It happens when we rub against a parallel universe where everything is the same but a little different. A universe where time is 5 seconds ahead of our own.

    I hardly think there would be a "left" explanation for deja vu any more than there would be a "left" explanation for why some people sneeze when they look at bright lights, but this question was asked in the September/October edition of Scientific American so here's the general jist of their answer:

    Remembering requires two co-operating processes; familiarity and recollection. Familiarity occurs quickly, before the brain can recall the source of the feeling. Conscious recollection depends on the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, whereas familiarity depends on regions of the medial cortex. When these co-operating processes get out of sync, we can experience deja vu
