Check out local libraries, they might have books or old newspapers. Also look into talking to the organizations that participated in said "demonstrations and campaigns.

I suggest you look into topics like:
-Californian history books (with a socio-political focus)
-Sources focusing on the anti-war movement in the US, and California in particular
-you can also look at campus protesting, as well as looking into the history of certain issues in california - be they racism, taxation, etc (you should find information on demonstrations and campaigns therein)
