what is the marxist view on art? after all an artist does not produce any vital need such as food/water/shelter. however i think that artists (by art i mean all forms 2d,3d,film,music,etc.) are a very important part of society as not only do they portray the mindset of society but they also bring about changes, new ways of thinkin, and point out problems. how important is the preservation of "artist" in the final utopian communist/marxist state?

this brings me to another thought. i think that the most important and valuable (not monetarily but essentialy) art is that which comments on problems in society. but in a perfect communist state, what will there be to comment on. if all art does is show how great we are, then what is the point. how many great movies have you seen, how many great songs have you listened to that deal with how everything is just ........ plain....... O.K.? the art that moves us is the art that shows us things we don't want to see and it shows how to triumph over them. what is the point of art if there is no conflict? i wouldn't want to live in a world where there is no art. i couldn't imagine that.........

    just a thought

But will there ever be a perfect society? I think with this many people, there will always be someone who's angry, and always something to fix. But I think that's also what keeps us going, y'know? If there was a perfect society, it wouldn't provide any challenge after a few generations, and people would start looking for problems out of boredom. Good and bad balance each other out, I think, although much more good is needed to make up for a little bad. So a few weak spots can keep the balance for entire nations, that's good, I think.

I couldn't imagine a world without art myself either, and although it isn't really a vital need, I think it is very important to society, because art creates society for a very big part. Without music, I would've never even thought about politics and all that. Without music, I would be what I now, well, feel pity on.

So what does art produce? I think it produces inspiration, and it produces happiness, which is important for every state, of course.

I agree Autumn. The world would be a very uninteresting place without music, art, literature and the freedom of expression.
