Default First Woman Wins Oscar for Best Director

Kathryn Bigelow has become the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director at the 82nd annual Academy Awards.* Nominated for nine Academy Awards, The Hurt Locker took home six awards at the ceremony held Sunday, March 7, 2010. Previous female director nominee, Barbara Streisand, present Bigelow her award.

The Hurt Locker tells the story of a bomb squad in the Armys elite Explosive Ordinance Disposal squad.* The movie brings the stress and cost of life of the Iraq war up close and personal.

Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to receive the Actors Guild of America award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures for The Hurt Locker. Ive spent a fair amount of time thinking about what my aptitude is, and I really think its to explore and push the medium. Its not about breaking gender roles or genre traditions, said Bigelow.

Is this part of the struggle? Is this a step forward?

I enjoyed the hurt locker, congratulations. Although the demonic depiction of the Iraqis annoyed the hell out of me, I guess it added to the tension of the film. The ironic downside to moments like these, is you KNOW everyone who wanted another film to win will say Kathryn won BECAUSE she's a woman. And truly, if a man won it'd be because of his artistic vision. Although I was rooting for Quintin(Inglorious Basterds= Love), I love all his films, congrats to her though. I was excited to hear Quintin's acceptance speech though. As far as this being a step forward, I think so. I don't think the Oscar itself is the step forward, but what it could mean. If more women get recognized as directors, maybe it'd lead to MORE female directed/written projects being respected and seen. I guess it could mean women having more control over how they're depicted in movies? Hopefully no female tyler perry comes and ruins everything for them. Back to my corner.

this i my opinion is not a win for working class or the left as the Hurt Locker seems to me to be a inherently right-wing film glorifying war and the american military however avatar seems to be a inherently left-wing film depicting a corporate run military and dealing with issues of native title and indigenous rights
