On July 26th, Cuba celebrated what to the United States has become a slap on the face, as to this day stood before them a figure who while aged, still lashed at them with the same ferocity as ever before. How is it this towering character has remained in power for so long and yet with no great opposition even from within his own country, and all this with hundreds of thousands marching during these national events.

It seems Castro’s revolution has outlived the expectancy attached to it by other world powers. Castro has for all intents and purposes achieved his goal of uniting the poor while helping to level off social class but the latter is obviously painful because of the irony set forth by the embargo. The United States has because of its own arrogance wished to punish this island nation, because it stood up for autonomy in the face of political corruption. The United States wishes to punish this country because education is free, the masses are taken care of, albeit with what they can muster. Sure the specter of this embargo hangs over Cuba, and opportunities are taken away from the Cuban people, but those alive long enough remember the voice of Castro and his revolutionaries coming from the mountains and how much worse things used to be.

So you see with the passing of Castro will also come the passing of an age. A time when the world could have been changed by ideas, where people were not familiar with the mind numbing effects of cable TV and the rabble rousing of market news. We all will surely miss Castro, whether we hate him or not is of no consequence… So it is more imperative now than ever before to learn as much about the past and welcome a new future where a difference can still be made. Where money does not turn us all into the all- singing, all-dancing crap of the world and whereby a voice can still be heard among the many.

it's interesting that castro who the u.s. would like you to believe opresses and dictates his people is not afraid to walk among his countrymen while no u.s. president can go anywhere without the secret service protecting his every move for fear of his life...

Castro's secret weapon is Black power. 60% of those remaining in Cuba are of a different complexion than white. While those in exile are 90% white. Castro keeps warning the folks that if the exiles come back into power they will put them in ghettos which is true if you ask me. Castro, I think has an uncanny ability to mobilize the people around the revolution.

re- castro = needs no protection

good point- shows how much he is honoured there. also, when he appeared at the manics gig in havana- he got a standing ovation, and i quote nicky wire (the bass player)- that shows how much they like him- tony blair wouldnt get a reception like that from his family

I think the Manics gig opened a lot of international doors. It was a worthy cultural exchange, in which the Manics themselves lost £10,000 ish.

Castro is a great man. I fear the upheaval when we lose him.

Castro will always be respected by his people because he is their liberator. He openly admires and is on the side of the youth and the minority, Bush however is never safe walking around in the streets because he knows that there are a lot of youths, minorities and political enemies that hate his capitalist ass.

In think Castro is the last America´s libertator from the economic domination of the u.s. that for many years has implanted a terrorism in Latin America and I think that everybody who wants justice, freedom equality for all the population, not only of latin america, the world also, will miss Castro and his strong ideas, personality and leaderism.

I doubt when castro leaves us there will be upheaval in his wake. His brother will take over, and the country shall carry on shining in glory.

The Exiles may stage another attempt to get in, but yet again they will have no success. They failed in the pigs because many of those amongst them were from the previous batista govt., and if capitalism was going to retake the island it couldnt have got any support if it was to return in a batistan form.
It will fail again for one other simple reason. The people of Cuba have seen what happened to the Eastern European countries, they are all too aware of what happens to a communist country which turns capitalist, and they will no more turn on communism than cut of their own hands.

Oh yeah, Cuba has problems, but it is impossible to have a country without them. Of all the countries in the World, I think Cuba is the one which has achieved the greatest system and culture.
Yes it has problems, but just compare them to the problems of the US, or Afghanistan. Hell, let's not even be extreme, what about compared to the problems of the UK, or Canada?

There was a liberal philosopher, i forget his name, who identified 4 absolute freedoms which a nation must fulfill before you can say it is even slightly liberal. Guess what, the UK doesnt fulfill them. I dont know much about other countries tho, but im sure it must be pretty much the same.

I think Castro could not be a better ruler, but the way you're all talking it sounds like he's already dead! While Castro is getting up there I can assume Cuba and all leftists everywhere will see many many more years from good old Castro. And even if Castro should die and Raul should die or something and the right wingers should move back in I'm sure history would find a way to repeat itself.

And another thing, this one kid I know supposedly has all of this "information" (propaganda) about how horrifyingly bad Castro is. Well let's see, Castro gained control through the people, he is ruled BY the people, hence I would assume the people could remove him if they so choosed.

    Anyway, VIVA CASTRO!
