What is the consensus here about the posting of convicted pedophiles photos on the internet under the US Meghan's Law? Granted the crime is unfathomable, but is it infringing upon the privacy laws of those who have served their prison sentence? Is not registering pedophile status with the town hall of the community enough?

The same thing as this wants to be inplaced in the UK after the horrific abduction and murder of Sarah Payne. What do you think about it, should they be named and shamed. Or will this drive them even further under ground or lead to attacks of innocent people mistaken for someone that they are not?

As i said in the Osama Tape thread, problems are deeper than is often understood by the common public.
Paedophilia is not something that will go away with stricter laws and stigma, innovative people will always find ways around systems, if they have the will to do so.
The problem of paedophiles can be attributed to two possible things, and whichever you beleive in is based on your philosophical understanding of the source of the human mind.
    either:
    1. People, and paedophilia, are results of basic inherent traits that that person has from birth. So, if people are inherently evil, shouldnt we be trying to identify evil people so that we can put them somewhere where they cant harm society and themselves, while still trying to provide them with a reasonable life, and attempting to teach them to be good/functional?
    2. People, and paedophiles, are an amalgum of the situations, people and opinions which are presented to them in their life. This would indicate a problem with society, something deep that there may not be a resolution for. If people end up committing crimes, it is because society has failed them, and it is society's responsibility to provide for it's members. If we have failed them, then we should go for that action which produces the greatest good for everyone. We, nor they, can take back what they have done. However, we can put them somewhere where they cannot harm others, with a reasonable life, and try and help them become a productive member of society (without them necesarily interacting much with it) and help them to realise their wrong, and come to peace with themself and their mind.

Now, for some reason, people use no.1 to justify the argument that such people should be burnt or whatever, but how will that prevent their crime of having happened? and is it our fault if we are born with inherent evil in us? it's not like we selected our genes.

If there is a public register it shouldn't really be like a walk down to the local police station and look on the notice board.

There should be one which persons such as scout masters, junior sports club officials and the like should be able to check when they take on new staff.

Well I don't know about that. Is casterization an effective way to stop them?
That would make it a purely sexual activity, I personally think it's a psychological problem.

i personally disagree with the US law and agree with what COmmie Bastard said. no one is being helped through these measures, not the community and not the past offender. the criminal justice system has become too retalitory when the original tenants of the system did not include revenge
