Carbon Offsets

COP15 will tout carbon offset markets as the solution to climate change, expanding capitalism into the very atmosphere. Markets exchange commodities for accumulation, not to fulfill human needs &ndash; much less to &ldquo;save the planet.&rdquo; Carbon emissions are supposed to decrease by virtue of trading carbon on the market, but the dirty secret is that no one knows how to assign a dollar equivalent to a molecule of carbon. Just like financial markets, carbon markets are a recipe for rampant fraud and speculation, followed by the inevitable crash of accumulation, both financial and ecological.

The problem is not carbon offset markets: the problem is markets themselves.

Markets exist only to buy and sell for profit, and so directly fuel the production of evermore commodities. Unrelenting increase in this production devours our finite world, inevitably releasing more carbon in the process. Capitalism thus inexorably leads to a global ecological crisis. If it's not the atmosphere, it will be the extinction of fish, the disappearance of bees, soil depletion and farmlands turning to desert.
