Default Is the United States less capable than before at maintaining empires?

Is America's dominance waning in the face of other developing powers and it's own exportation problem?

No, America's dominance is not waning. However, there are emerging superpowers (Russia, China, India) that will probably have more tensions with America. But that would be inter-imperialist conflict.

In earlier times, the U.S. assimilated the places it conquered, as with the miitary conquest of Texas and the military conquest of Hawaii. Today the U.S. is more concerned with control of markets, raw materials, and trade routes. Today the U.S. will sent troops to the opposite side of the world, not to govern another nation generally, but to govern them just enough to make sure the industries there will be trading partners with U.S. corporations. The U.S. government is bewildered at the geography of Iraq: "How did our oil get under your land?"

Yes. The US invasion of Iraq was a sign, albeit an oblique one, that its position of hegemony has weakened considerably. The sign of a hyperpower is not the ability to invade third world countries but to convince other powers that such an action is just and acceptable. Clearly the US no longer occupies a position of leadership amongst the Western nations (or at least it has weakened) and this has permitted other powers to assert their influence. Global US hegemony (a reality just a decade ago) has fractured

I think your history is a tad simplistic. Texas was an independent republic when it willingly joined the US, and Hawaii was a republic with Dole (ie Dole fruit) as Prez, after they deposed the monarchy. Though the conquering of mexico certainly fits the bill.

Obama is just as imperialistic as bush, he's only more tempered.
