Yeah, sorry, ive got my history wrong on this one - im thinking of Berlin, 1940, not Dresden. Fair cop.

agreed. Previous post deleted given the historical inaccuracies rendering it totally irrelevant.

btw - i stand by my "this is, of course, conjecture" comment, though. Any theorising on events that never actually happened is conjecture by its very nature.
No problems... thought you might have got the wrong end of the stick somewhere there...!

I still think Dresden was wrong but I try to imagine the mindset of people at the time and they would have shown little sympathy in the Netherlands, Poland, France, Britain and the Soviet Union.

But then like Gandhi said, an eye for an eye and we all end up in a world full of blind people.

Dresden was just one civilian city bombed during the war. To raise it to some great level as a travesty is doing many people injustice. Many cities were bombed in ww2 and many atrocities had occurred but both sides had committed these. The nazi minister of propaganda was able to twist the amount of dead early on trying to discredit the allies and try to gain a foothold in a lost war. Yes the bombing was horrific but it was not the only one. The nazis bombed cities just like that, everyone in ww2 did b/c they saw it as the norm. Respect it as a horrible tragedy but don't think of it as a solitary incident to be used and somehow respect or defend nazi germany.

Were not defending Nazi Germany. We are only respecting the civilians that died needlessly from the bombings. Just because the Nazi leaders bombed cities in the USSR and killed hundred of thousands that doesn't downplay the United State's bombing of civilians.

I'm not condoning Dresden, far from it, it was a horrific and brutal massacre that the allies craftily used as a definition of 'freedom', but at that time what other alternatives would there have been ? Warnings and routes made for the escape for civilians ? A full scale ground attack ?

from my understanding their was very little military presence in the city , the allies could have taken it with little fighting , and the reason there was a small military presence was because the city was worthless (in the military sence) however it was also considered at the time to be one of the most beautiful citys in europe and they knew destroying it would be a massive blow against the nazi moral

That's disgusting. It's sad that the 'victors' version of wars is spread as gospel while their atrocities are brushed under the carpet.
