I just finished Che: A Revolutionary Life by Jon Lee Anderson and I was struck by one overriding thought:

Man, Che was a HARDASS. I mean, he killed a bunch of his men for as little of offenses as desertion. I could understand if they had like told the military all of the secrets of the revolutionary force, and some did, but he pretty much killed left and right. Oh well.
Direct action is key- don't just sit at your computer and rant at leftists you disagree with slightly- get out there and DO IT. Organize. Change your life, and change the lives of those around you. The reason the waterheads are still in power is because we aren't being loud enough.

Any information about him and whoever he was associated with that would be transferred over to an enemy would mean the death of him, others, and the revoltuonary movement.

    It would've been extremely neccessary.

Um, In the US there is (was?) a death penalty for ditching the draft buddy. Che wasn't nearly "too harsh", especially considering that it was the revolutionaries choice to join in and deserting would obviously lead to the assumption that they were spies or something of the sort.

He was absolutely right about that and as Neutral Nation clearly says: It would've been extremely neccessary - It was.

There`s no way to justify murder. If u think Che was right killing those desertors then u`re also justifying Che`s murderers. If u really have to find a reason behind these acts remember Che was human, and do not taint him by saying he was right in killing others.

Sure he was not a Hardass at all!!! He was a bright man, and he had the guts a man needs to have to defend a revolution.

What would have happen if CHe didn't kill these traiters? Then the army would have found Fidel and his comrades and then there would be now liberation in Cuba!

Guys, loads of deserters and squeelers were shot during the guerrillla campains, however not many were carried out by che, in fact during the cuban revolutionary war che only killed 2.
Another thing you 'idealists' have to realize is that in war, life is a totaly different ball game, if you dont kill deserters they will go off with their weapons and pillage and steal and eveen worse start advising the enemy of troop positions and numbers. Che was, therefore a good revolutionary who was TOTALY commited. He condemmed many to death afterwards so as to show enemys of socialism that they were in now and not to interfere, very intelligent if you ask me. Also if you read 'A revolutionary life' by Jon Lee Anderson you will see that for first time offenders and young revolutionarys he was exremely merciful. Case Closed.

I don't think there is a death penalty for ditching the draft. You're thinking of desertion and even that will merely result in an honorable discharge and not death. ditching the draft is a felony and will result in prison time but it is not a crime punishable by death. I have no idea where you heard that ditchingt the draft will result in the death penalty. I agree, che went a little too far but if I were put inot the same situation with the same amount of power, I would probably have done the same. I am a little on the militant side and I would personally not take to kindly to having my revolutionary soldiers betraying me or *****ing out in the middle of a guerrilla campaigne or something.

Same here. I just finnished reading "The African Dream" by Che and it points out how the deserters (apart from the disunity between the Congolese and the Rwandans) was the major reason that that revolution falied. There was a complete lack of discipline within the ranks which caused disorderly battles in which many soldiers simply chickened out and deserted with their weapons. Che did the right thing when he had deserters shot, not only because they could be spies or what not, but because they need to be shown discipline in order to cnduct a revolution.

Oh, and about the draft thing, I recall somebody being on death row for ditching the draft. I don't remember the story or if it was just for ditching the draft but i think it was during the time berofe Carter pardoned the people who avoided the draft.

Without wanting to give excuse , the death of the deserters , because a death of a person is very important , whoever he is and whatever he represents , We must understand that during WAR logic and sence lose their meaning and the warrior , guerilla , fighter is taken over by his instics and he might behave in a lot , in way as an animal when feels threatened . As most of the people who post above the revolution was an armed war .
Further more deserters have been excecuted in almost all the wars that happened in all times even if ( unfortunately ) there was not enough proof .
In Greece there is a quote " A lot of people like to betray but , nobody likes the betrayer " .
In addition in ancient Greece , a highly civilised place , during war when they collected the dead warriors , the ones who died by being injured in the back were not buried , because they thought they were hit while running away from the enemy . So if you imagine the deserters had the worst luck .

i think it was absolutely essential.

in any situation like that you need to have strong leaders. if you have a leader that lets people go when they have betrayed you others will do so without a second thought.
the action he took also showed how dedicated he was to the cause and this encouraged his men to figh on

I think the fact that Che understood the need to exercute deserters and had a no-nonsense apparoach to tratiors and men who deserter the cause, adds to his myth. The Revolution almost failed because of peasents betraying them and there is more than one cause of men deserting and going on to aid Batista. He took action that needed to be done and didnt shirk from his duty. Those exercutions needed to be done otherwise Cuba would of ended up like Gutamala.
Our every action is a battle cry against imperialism, and a battle hymn for the people\'s unity against the great enemy of mankind: the United States of America. Wherever death may surprise us, let it be welcome, provided that this, our battle cry, may hav
