I found the Cambridge Companion to Marx at my local library; it seemed as a relatively good marx summary to me.
I just received my autographed copy of Killing Hope by William Blum, I plan on spending the rest of the summer on it.

Here's a heavy, if you want: Russia At War (1941-1945) by Alexander Werth.
Lots of detail, interviews, personal anecdotes and I think it's a good read because it was written from the perspective of a Russian who wasn't a commie, so you won't find any discrepancies in detail (most official Soviet accounts of WW2 included bloated figures of death tolls and casualties of war; for purely propaganda purposes).
The prolonged barrage engulfed Zero-One in the glow of a thousand suns. But unlike their former masters with their delicate flesh, the machines had little to fear of the bombs' radiation and heat. Thus did Zero-One's troops advance outwards in every direction. And one after another, mankind surrendered its territories. So the leaders of men conceived of their most desperate strategy yet. A final solution: the destruction of the sky.

I like biographies myself, so go to the library and pick up biographies of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao.
