I'd like to get legit figures regarding the ownership of websites that people use for news. Just wondering if anyone qualified or learning in the research/stats area could tell me the best way to go about this. As I see it, the problem with just using Alexa for page ranking is that it it ignores the fact that many of us go to smaller pages than, say, BBC and that usage doesnt make a big dent.

There was a script that someone discontinued that would take new companies most mentioned in google news and rank them by frequency. Thats now discontinued, but I may do that myself but it would take a few months to get any data that could genuinely be classed as a proper snapshot.

I wish to do this to dispell the idea that because lots of people (40% compared to 35% newspapers and 70% tv) now use the internet as a primary news source, the sites we view for news still go through all the filters and that the Chomsky Hermann propaganda model is still alive and well.

I'm not an academic but I would like to explore the best way to get this data, so any suggestions would be a great help!
