Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos were close comrades. Che even named one of his sons after the revolutionary hero. But what really happened to him? There is the official story, that he died in a helicopter crash (october 1959), and that Fidel Castro personally headed the search. Nothing was ever found. In Cuba there are several rumours. 1, that Fidel had him bumped off because he was too charismatic and popular with the people, and therefore posed a threat to Fidel's personal power base. 2, that he just dissapeared and is now living in Miami and a multi-millionaire to boot!!!

Does anyone else know about this? The rumours are as intreguing as the official story story.

Ive heard that he was in a one engine plane on his way to the Oriente Province and there was a storm. His plane crashed somewhere in the Gulf (near the Cuban coast). This would make more sense than Castro assassinating him. I mean that would be the same as killing Che. Castro was pretty tyrannical, but I don't think he would kill his best friends.

It very well could have been the CIA right? That was the time period that they were trying to kill Castro, Che and all of the revolution's leaders right?

Not long before it. At that point, the CIA were drawing up plans and getting anti-Castro supporters together and shit like that. The main operations underway were pamhplet dropping and some air attacks, though those were usually by disgruntled Cuban right-wingers. Castro's communism hadn't been announced yet, though growing ties with the USSR were public knowledge.

Did Che get a photo of Camilo for the cover of the first edition of Guerrilla Warfare?

Although i am certain Castro had nothing to do with his death, isnt it true Cienfueggos believed in capitalism?? That is a good enough motive if you ask me.

I do not believe that Castro killed Camilo, but contrary to what people are saying, he would have had a good motive.

Camilo was very popular (but not nearly as popular as Fidel) and Camilo was NOT a Socialist. Fidel could've thought that Camilo might lead the people away from Socialism.

If Camilo wasn't a socialist, then why did he fight in the Revolution?

Evenso, Mazdak, a capitalist wouldn't fight in a revolution where the only possible outcome is Communism. I know for a fact he was communist anyway.

Menshevik if you would remember Castro did not reveal himself to be a communist and his revolution as "socialist" until after the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. Throughout his 3 years in the jungles and a year or so in public office Castro denied he was a communist. He even went to America and said he was going to hold elections, that he wasn't a communist and liked the idea of free enterprise. Many of Castro's comrades during the war were illiterate young men who were not communist and fought for the overthrow of Batista and the re-establishment of elections and electoral democracy.

Most of the Cuban fighters didn't like Communism simply because the Yanks said it was bad. Most of them had little education and no real understanding of Communism.

In Che's brigade, he was able to educate and convert (so to speak) a good number of his troops to Marxism.

Camilo Cienfuegos, Ernesto Guevara, and Fidel Castro were all Communists. They were identified as Communist radicals by the Cuban government. They were fighting ultimately for a Communist Cuba. No one can contest that, no one. Che talks about why he joined up with Castro in several of his diaries--Castro was a Marxist, just like him.
