A lot of my favorite bands are metal. A LOT of 'em are. And none of the vocals are screaming - there are growls, howls, shrieks, pig-squeals, and the occasional note that sends a straight chill down your spine, but no screaming.

I like some metal, but I don't listen to it on a regular basis. Folk, older blues, rock, and punk are more of my thing. Metal is really really good to lift weights to though. I guess all the screaming triggers something primal that gets your adrenaline going, lol.

I wouldn't think less of you for liking metal, it's just not my cup of cha. My current flatmate is a metalhead so I hear quite a lot of the stuff and whilst I wouldn't choose to listen to it I can see the technical quality behind some of it.
That line was actually tongue in cheek. I figured no one would really put down someone for likin metal, especially on this forum.

I don't pick the music I based by its genre, but instead I choose what I listen to for its sound. I haven't found a metal song that I like, but I am sure there are quite a few good ones I haven't heard yet.

Damn, I should have been more specific at the beginning of this thread as that is how I typically choose music.

Screamo, Nightwish and rap metal don't really have much to do with metal as far as I'm concerned. Pira-- err, purchase an Iron Maiden album like "Number of the Beast", "Piece of Mind" or "Powerslave" and listen to it.

Can anybody tell me why they even bother to have bass players in bands like lamb of god, and all that remains?
Not relevant to metal, since they aren't, but presumably for the same reason Underoath does. That is, who knows?
Which reminds me, it turns out that even Underoath's debut sucked, though less so than the rest of the crap they put out.

Metal is actually a very diverse genre, there is little to compare band like Sonata Arctica (who are pretty much to metal what early Arnie films are to cinema; cheese but supprisingly watchable) and say a progerssive metal band like tool.

Power metal bands like Sonata Arctica are definitely a guilty pleasure for me. Hammerfall and Rhapsody of Fire. Especially Rhapsody, with the singer's funny Italian pronunciations while singing in English.

Eh, I don't like Rhapsody (of Fire), but if you like them, you should also like Aquaria ('Heart of the Gods') and Fairyland ('The Fall of an Empire'). Yes, I know, 'Fairyland'? Hell, you listen to Rhapsody, you should be used to cheese by now.
I don't especially like them, but they're fairly similar in style, and I remember liking them when I was a Rhapsody fan.

Sonata Arctica (who are pretty much to metal what early Arnie films are to cinema; cheese but supprisingly watchable)

I'm not much of a fan of them either, but that's accurate.
However, the most awesome cheesy band ever would be Timeless Miracle.

I have to confess that I have a big soft spot for Sonata Arctica, I've seen them three times; though in my defence, I never actually bought tickets for myself, I went either to keep a friend company or to prevent a ticket being wasted. Normally I don't see a lot of metal, I tend to listen 'softer' genres of rock music.

That said, they were great each time and put on a blindingly good show, as have most of the other metal bands I have seen.

Fair enough. I know a few people who are fellow USPM fans but like Sonata Arctica, so it's probably more a matter of taste. Also, when it comes to European power metal, have you heard Hibria? Hibria are pretty fast, and if you like Ecliptica-era (and their similar pre-Unia albums) Sonata Arctica, you should like them. Of course, they're fairly different, but still awesome. Also, most SA fans I've seen enjoy early Stratovarius albums, such as 'Visions'.

    FAIL.

And as far as the bass thing goes, in my band, its a running joke that our bassist isn't necessary. (I'm a bassist, too, so it's ok for me to make jokes like that)

In truth, it's a lie. We add Cryptopsy-esque bass parts, and even when our bassist is following my guitar part, it adds much more depth to the sound.

I think a better idea of the spectrum would be Sonata Arctica, Pain of Salvation, Ayreon (prog/power metal stuff) to My Dying Bride, Agalloch (melancholy, slightly doomy stuff) to Cryptopsy, Nile, Morbid Angel (all-out brutality fest)
