Was Che a hero? If he was, then why and what attributes make him a hero.

He helped many people through struggling times, he fought for what was right, and fought to liberate oppressed people. He is a hero although i dont think he wanted to be thought of as one.

Che unwaveringly stood up for what he believed was right.

Che was willing to die for his beliefs.

Che had a disregard for material things and the trappings of success.

Che was an incredible intellectual and romantic.

Che was an accomplished writer and poet.

Che was admired by all who worked with him, sometimes to the death.

Che was a lifelong believer in learning and surrounded himself by young folks so he could teach them.

Che was a visionary who could only be stopped in his quest for a new world order by death.

    Che despised racism and sexism

    Che had a natural charisma

Che's life, and the injustice of his death (though it helped cement his beliefs, too), keeps the fire burning in the hearts of those who have even the slightest inclination to be like him. The cause cannot be allowed to fall underneath and be extinguished, no matter how hard Capitalists attempt to do just that. Che's memory helps keep it alive, and in effect, keeps him alive too. I'm certainly aware that he's alive, within me.

A guy that did the imossible taking over Cuba
A guy that stood up for people who screamed for help.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a big fan of Che, of he did and what he stood for, but lets for a moment look at the negatives about the man (and lets face it, nobody's perfect).

Che was driven by what HE believed. The world is full of people who have differing opinions on the governing of nations, and these opinions are fueled on the belief that they are best for the people. In this regard, Che is simply like most others. The fact that he ACTED and succeded on these beliefs is extremely commendable, however, what was the result of this success ?? Many people were killed, either directly by Che, or by the mechanisms initiated by him. These were not necessarily bad/evil people, but people who thought differently about the way to best govern nations. Batista and Co. were corrupt, no doubt about it, but many others were killed who did not necessarily fall under the corrupt category. Politics is not black and white, and is certainly not a matter of good vs evil. Same with Che.

Under the simple definition of the word "Hero", yes, Che can be considered one, because of his feats of courage and nobility of purpose. However, I would like to see some room for critique about his actions. the way some people go on about him, he would come close to being touched by the hand of God.

    Everything everyone has already said.

Che was a true voice for the voiceless, he sought equality for ALL. Nuf said.

    Jhala,

You'll get no such backlash from me.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE SEE THE IMPERFECTIONS OF CHE!

Remember, that is the power of his life! If we see Che as another imperfect person, soon, we realize that we are capable of the same things!

When we idolize Che, we make his message impotent. Would he want us idolizing him? No.

The more we focus on his humanity, his imperfection, his faults, the more and more he seems like a brother, a friend.

And from that we can take his accomplishments as visions of our own! We can see his striving, as an imperfect person, as striving we can do ourselves!

Thank you for continuing to remind us how imperfect he was, it's essential!

My brother and friend Che was less than perfect. Good.

Doesn't that just mean I can do the same?

    FOH ... Thanks mate!!!

I just wanted to reiterate the negatives because the impression that I have had over the week that I have been on this site, is that some people are idiolizing him, forgeting the fact the he "...is just a man".

    Kudos to you.

    Cheers mate!

Even Che himself said in the end, "I know you've come to kill me. Shoot, coward, you're only going to kill a man." -Che, Oct. 9, 1967, last words before being murdered.

Just a man. Yes, you can kill the man, never the revolution! Never the vision! Never the message!

I agree with everthing each of you said.

I think that another part of it is the myth that evolved around his figure.... and the fact he and not someone else symbolises the communist struggle

Likewise, I agree with everything that you've all said. What makes Che so heroic in my eyes is that he was just as flawed and imperfect as I am, yet he accomplished great things. His example is a source of great hope and inspiration to me.

Is che inperfect????oviously. But it is clear he has many more perfections than inperfections.
So, added to the fact that he is a hero, he was a very good one, and his purposes deserve a very good admiration from every people.
    He wanted peace.

Moreover, in every story there is a hero and a bad guy, in this case, the yanqees.

"Queremos paz, queremos construir una vida mejor para nuestro pueblo, y por eso, eludimos al máximo las provocaciones maquinadas de los yanquis, pero conocemos la mentalidad de sus gobernantes; quieren hacernos pagar muy caro el precio de esa paz"-CHE 1964
