Any other Irish on here extremely disturbed by the situation going on right now? I mean like, 2000 jobs gone yesterday, in a day, 7 billion euro public money into private banks on the same day, banks estimated to have around 50 billion bad loans, how exactly are any public services gonna stay afloat in the next few years, with these kinds of raids on the public treasury and pension fund? This looks like IMF stuff. What do you think?
What is the best action to take? Am I just a celtic cub overreacting to a new situation?
I'll be making a lump repayment of a student loan next week, including the interest, to Bank of Ireland who I have just given 3 billion to. That's the risk and reward of capitalism. I think I'll have to give my loan manager an earful.

I dont know which is worse, the economic situation in the free state or the ineptitude of its leaders.
But every country is in some form of meltdown, dont know if Ireland is particularly badly off.
Aristotle's mind was so completely dominated by his economic environment that he was unable to conceive of a world in which there would be no chattel slaves, and so declared that slaves must always exist. A prophecy now falsified for hundreds of years.

Shops are closing down everywhere here. The Irish people should be A LOT more worried. So far, excluding the people that have lost their jobs, people are just like "Ah sure it's only a recession we'll get through it".
Wake up people, this is serious!
The haemoragghing of jobs seems incredible, although I haven't really looked at the long term stats. But I thought I heard Ireland might be in a worse position than some other countries because of the obscene housing bubble that the banks and capitalists inflated and which is ruining them now.

Ireland is to a degree imo worse off than many nations and their response to this has been an absolute joke .
Their response can be summed in the analogy that their putting a plaster on a brain tumour .
The waterford crystal situation is looking ever bleaker last time i checked it seems many of the workers are pushing for nationalisation .
On the radio today it looks as if teachers are going to push for strike action because they feel the action of a "1 day protest" by the ICTU is pretty much laughable considering many teachers situation .
"
UNIONS REPRESENTING over 50,000 teachers will decide next Monday on a plan of action over the pension levy.
Leaders of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI), the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland and the Irish Federation of University Teachers have already signalled that all options – up to and including industrial action – are on the table."

So what can we do ?
The is clear that any comrades who aren't organised must get to it right away .
List of Orgs in Ireland:

Wel also need to change our approach to political work , we need to stop being members and start being party builders . Paper sales for example , their primary function is not to make funds or to just get rid of your quota , but it must be used as an object to inverse political conversation with others . It is of immense importance towards building of an organisation.
Also building of your org around campaigns , health cuts in a local area etc.

They are not supposed to perform miracles. For a model and faultless proletarian revolution in an isolated land, exhausted by world war, strangled by imperialism, betrayed by the international proletariat, would be a miracle."

does anyone know if it's worse than in England?

Economic crisis = anger at leaders = public appetite for change = revolutionary opportunities.
Make the most of it.
Which is why we need to get organised , I cannot stress this enough .
I don't care what org you choose as long as its a revolutionary left one . Just do it .

i was just wondering, do the various left wing organisations and parties in ireland contact each other to organise big demonstrations? because the way i see it alone they dont make much of an impact but if they joined together they could make a difference. i know they is no chance of a merger together of the different orgs/parties but together they could achieve something

I heard its the highest levels of unemployment since they started recording it back in the 1960s.
Wasn't Ireland extremely impoverished back then? It sounds pretty bad.
And how is the labor party there? I have never heard of it before, is it social-democrat? I was under the impression that Ireland essentially had a two party system, like the Republicans and the Democrats except with Fine Gael and Fianna Fail. Has this party emerged out of nowhere?

... A good start" - Russian joke
back in th 60s it was pretty bad but it just seemed really really bad because it was followed a while after by the celtic tiger
labour does fuck all for anyone and it has hardly any support although it has gained support but only because fianna fáil and fine gael have lost popularity

deterioration of housing values was worse than England. it seems unemployment is or will be- part of the problem is that most firms are not owned in Ireland, so they are more likely to pull out. Ireland isn't the worst in the EU, but I believe it had one of the steepest falls (after Iceland obviously).

it has certainly improved though in that most republicans have realised the need for the unity of the working class
obviously there is still the odd eejits in the republican movement
Actually I think a more correct mapping would be this.
Economic crisis.
Government needs a plan to solve the crisis.
Government uses a bailout program. - Program makes the American domestic budget go down due to the fact the United States is facing massive bankruptcy.
People begin to get angry at the leaders around the world due to the repercussions of the original crisis.
People feel the need to rise up and get rid of the original problem to begin with.
This in all positions of the map ='s a sort of revolutionary potential from reformist to direct.
“Freedom only for the supporters of the government, only for the members of one party – however numerous they may be – is no freedom at all. Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently. Not because of any fanatical concept of ‘justice’ but because all that is instructive, wholesome and purifying in political freedom depends on this essential characteristic, and its effectiveness vanishes when ‘freedom’ becomes a special privilege.”
