A mother of three takes Sanctuary at Holyrood Church to protect her children from becoming ICE orphans.
The New Sanctuary Movement has deep roots in many of our faith traditions. Hospitality and protection of the most vulnerable are hallmarks of our faiths. The embodiment of these values has taken on a relevancy in this time when our common humanity is constantly under attack. ¨We cannot be indifferent to human suffering¨, Fr. Luis Barrios from Holyrood Church states and continues, ¨sanctuary nowadays is a moral obligation that demands from us to defy an immigration law that is unjust.¨
Amanda, a working mom of three U.S. citizen children, has lived with her family in New York for over a decade after fleeing death threats in Guatemala. She wakes up at 6am every morning and gets her kids ready for school.
The government wants to deport her, and Amanda now faces a decision no mother should have to make: take her children with her to Guatemala where they face widespread violence in a country they don’t know, or leave her children to grow up without the love that only she can give as their parent. Like any mother, Amanda wants to continue being there for her children, seeing them grow and eventually graduate from school and go to college.
Amanda no longer wants to walk in the shadows. In order to protect her children she has decided to go into sanctuary as she, together with her family, friends, and community demands the justice that she needs. Amanda requests the immigration authorities to reopen her case and to have her day in court. Today we will hold a press conference at 5pm at Holyrood Church and Amanda and her children will be taking sanctuary.

El Nuevo Movimiento Santuario tiene raíces profundas en nuestras diferentes tradiciones de fe. La hospitalidad y la protección del más vulnerable son marcas esenciales que florecen en tiempos donde la injusticia y el racismo atacan la humanidad de todos. ¨No podemos ser indiferentes al sufrimiento humano¨, Padre Luis Barrios de la Iglesia Santa Cruz declara y continúa, ¨es nuestra obligación moral desafiar la ley cuando ésta es injusta por lo que tomar y dar santuario hoy en día no es solo una opción sino una obligación.¨
Amanda, es una madre de tres hijos ciudadanos que viven en este país, ella ha tomado refugio en un ‘santuario’ de la Iglesia de la Santa Cruz, localizado en el área de Washington Heights, Manhattan, para evitar que los oficiales de inmigración la detengan y la manden a Guatemala. Como resultado, los hijos quedarán huérfanos sin una madre quien los cuide. La familia quedaría separados en el proceso.
Hoy en dia santuario es más relevante ya que bajo la presente administración se ha evidenciado todo un sistema de represión y persecución en contra de nuestras comunidades minoritarias y migrantes. Amanda es miembro de la coalición Nuevo Santuario que es una red de comunidades de fe unidos públicamente en solidaridad con las familias y comunidades que sufren detenciones y deportaciones. Luchamos contra el racismo, las injusticias económicas, los abusos contra inmigrantes y trabajamos en la construcción de espacios santuario para mantener segura nuestras comunidades.
Amanda quiere salir de las sombras y al entrar en santuario da a luz a la justicia que le ha sido negada. Ella no se esconde de la justicia sino que la busca junto con miles y miles de familias que quieren vivir en dignidad y que demandan un cambio de las leyes migratorias que les permitan vivir en la luz, con paz y justicia. Hoy a las 5pm tendremos una conferencia de prensa en la Iglesia Santa Cruz donde Amanda, junto con sus hijos entrará en santuario.
