Neo Nazi mass murder plotters not 'terrorist'
Nova Scotia media not telling the full story. Plotters' Neo-Nazi sympathies downplayed
Thankfully, a plot to kill a lot of people in Halifax on Valentine's Day was foiled.
Who were those plotters? Why would they want to do such an awful thing?
Well, they were murderous misfits, Federal Justice minister Peter MacKay told reporters yesterday, adding that the “the attack does not appear to have been culturally motivated, therefore not linked to terrorism.”
Maybe MacKay is right. Maybe he isn't.
But Nova Scotia's media is not giving us the information we need to make up our minds.
Reporters quote neighbours, who assure us the kids come from nice families and friends who are in shock that the plotters could even entertain such horrendous plans, let alone follow up on them.
That at least some of the plotters were into posting Nazi paraphernalia on their facebook pages, or espousing white supremacist ideas on message boards has been downplayed by local reporters.
The Tumblr blog of James Gamble, the 19-year old found dead in Timberlea, features pictures of Adolph Hitler and marching Nazis.
You go to the Tumblr blog of Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, the Illinois woman now in custody, and a swastika is the first thing you see.
Meanwhile, thanks to the work of people who know their way around in the world of blogs, message boards and handles, there are strong suggestions that at least Souvannarath has a long-time infatuation with fascist and white supremacist ideas. None of this has made it into Nova Scotia news outlets.
One CBC reporter looked at Gamble's Tumblr blog, and mentions the Nazi references in passing, almost as an afterthought.
The same for a Chronicle Herald story, where a reference to Nazi images warrants one sentence.
You have to wonder whether coverage would have changed in tone had the plotters been Muslims, and had the Tumblr images been of Osama Bin Laden, or ISIS militants?
Would that have become headline material? Would MacKay still have referred to misfits? Would reporters have shrugged it off?
Or would it have become a story about terrorism?

I for one, believe any organization that even slightly endorses their principles should be banned, and those that believe in this filth, sent to medical facilities where specialized psychologists can reform them.

Before I picked up The Better Angels of Our Nature, I assumed that most murders were motivated by economic gain. In fact, only about 15 percent of U.S. homicides involve robbery or other economic factors. The perpetrator is usually driven by a sense of injustice or desire for revenge, and he doesn’t trust institutions to mete out punishment.
The greater the social inequality, the greater the sense of an unjust social system, the less people expect justice from those in charge, the more those in charge have to resort to extreme measures to make sure their citizens obey.
A direct quote from the CBC article covering the incident: "I wouldn't characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals that had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens."

The world of the mainstream media, where only Muslims are terrorists.
Personally, I'd like to see the vacuous and racially-charged term "terrorist" put out to pasture altogether. It's a meaningless but emotionally loaded term that serves the purposes of demonizing people of middle eastern descent in support of endless wars while justifying increasingly totalitarian legislation.
These kids kind of seem like "dark enlightenment" terrorists, as ridiculous as that seems.

I think it's paramount to offer a distinction between indiscriminate terrorism and the discriminant ideological murder. From my understanding, the primary desired affect of terrorism is to incite fear not the actual murder or destruction of property.
The terrorist, committing whatever atrocity, strives to attract attention to a specific cause or to foment chaos. Not to resolve an issue or satisfy a desire through the act of violence itself. The ideological murderer targets specific demographics, these would be KKK lynchings.
Given this understanding, they were definitely terrorists. They were driven by a political motive and incited fear.

If I ran an empire that stretched across the globe, and various malcontents within my empire tried to rebel against my rule, do you know what I would call those rebels? I would call them terrorists.
