working class
there is a lot of talk here about the working class
so what jobs do you guys have
-
I'm a student and parent. Eventually I think I would like to teach mathematics.
-
Currently unemployed. Gonna start looking for a job early next year. Probably end up getting a working class job. Seeing as how i don't have that much education and all.
-
Not that its any of your business (and I could see why some people might not want to answer), I work as a support worker for a man with developmental disabilities. There is another user I know of, who has the same job and many other who work full time 'blue collar' jobs. I can only assume this question was a strawman, your attempt to point out that the demographic of this forum may not be entirely composed of proletarians, somehow making up for your lack of a cogent political argument.
-
Surely to determine someone's social class the question should be what jobs did your parents(and perhaps grandparents) do?

No, you've stated this nonsense before and I called you out on it then as well. One's social class is determined not by what relationship to the means of production one's family has (unless of course they are dependent on them), but rather to their own relationship to the means of production. As I stated before, I don't care what you source (not that you provided a source last time either), you're wrong.
-
I'm temporarily unemployed and loving every second of it.

By your reasoning it could be argued Paris Hilton is a proletarian.
Its all very well going on about relationship to the means of production, however, not everyone who dosent own means of production considers themselves to be working class. There's a subjective factor that must be taken into consideration, I.e. Class consciouness

Are you high? In what world are the people Paris Hilton is dependent upon, proletarians? Her parents own of the largest hotel chains in the world and probably employ more wage laborers then exist in the country you're from.

Heh, well since you like to present yourself as some sort of authority on a subject that you clearly have no conception of, I really have no more patience for you and am not even going to refute your bullshit, maybe someone else will. To be honest, I sincerely expected something better then this, at least give me some weird convoluted argument to work with, not this simplistic nonsense.
-
shitty warehouse work all day every day.
also what's with these lame internet nazis showing up here all of a sudden
-
Yeah, sounds like some standard class-baiting by some nazis.
I'm in my 30s and have been working for about half my life now and have no savings or much to show for it besides some lingering debts and a rental appartment. Most people are workers and have all sorts of ideas and so most of my comrades and non-political people I know are workers; I have some comrades and know some radicals that come from more privilaged backgrounds or have yuppie type jobs and I could really give a shit as long as they have good politics.
-
I wage slave in a retail store. Pays my rent plus a little extra for food but now crimbo is on its way they've hired a bunch of extra temp staff and I'm not getting nearly as much overtime as I used to in the summer. Plus it's shit work anyway. I want someone to come along and bulldoze the mall.
-
I'm on disability now, but most of my working life was spent as a call center worker.

Why all the hatin'??
Paris Hilton...wots not to luv??
If a person’s principle means of livelihood depends on selling labour power then he or she is a worker. It matters not whether that remuneration is called a wage or a salary or comes in the form of benefits, or is paid weekly or monthly.
This does not mean every member of the working class lives virtually an identical life to all other workers. The working class is stratified according to economic, cultural and social factors, just as the capitalist class has its millionaires, billionaires and trillionaires.....and Paris Hilton.
Oh yes...
In a hammock--under a Mango tree which is about to fruit...previously a London Tube driver.

That's actually not allowed by law, at least I presume (I know it's illegal in USA).

Yeah, it's allowed. It's up to management what happens with tips. Generally the staff get them (often shared equally by all the staff because there's a 'tips jar' or something similar) but if the mangement are particularly vicious or stupid, they'll keep the lot. Sometimes, they count tips as part of the wage, and pay under minimum wage using the tips money to make up the difference.

Do you know how many call centre people are envying you right now?
Typical "I think a have a fever!!!!!!!!!!!" -"You just burning coffee" kind of job.
-
I'm a highschool student but my dad is a correctional officer and my mom is a highschool art teacher. Not sure what that makes me ("middle class"?).
-
Lately, I've been a lab rat - letting grad students and doctors take samples of my muscles, dose me with drugs, have me fill out psychology questionnaires, etc.
Prior to this, I was a "Functionality Quality Assurance Tester" (beta-tested video games for minimum wage).
Before that, I had a contract to plan the Quebec Public Interest Research Group at McGill University's "Radical Frosh".
Before that, I was a lab rat.
Before that, I handed out the "Metro" at a bus stop - a free shitty daily newspaper.
Before that, I worked at A&W.
Before that, I dug some ditches, laid some stones, and poured some concrete.
Before that, I worked at a call centre.
Before that, I worked at a different call centre.
Before that, I went door to door for the "Wilderness Committee".
Before that, I worked washing dishes at a diner.
Before that, I worked at a Subway resteraunt.
Before that, I worked at a KFC.
Etc.

Underpaid clerk. It's dirty, cold, and both the management, and the customers treat me like crap. I don't recommend it. The only good thing is it' s a union gig, and, as much as the pay sucks, it's probably better than what I would get anywhere else. Currently working on my BA so I can get out of this hellhole.
