Lenin never changed his idea of what a party should be; he just changed strategies as the conditions demanded. I see the party operating much the same was as Lenin initially saw it: a mass party of the workers(no peasants or bourgeois allowed) run along democratic lines. The idea of what the party should do is much more complex.

I would agree with Lenin that the dictatorship of the proletariat became tainted with "bureaucratic deformities" in the course of the civil war, and made the full transition to bourgeois dictatorship sometime in the 1930's.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over "vanguard". The Bolshevik party became a mass party by 1910. I don't see how mass parties aren't relevant to modern industrialized countries. If anything, mass parties are even more relevant to industrialized countries.
