I wouldn't call him an idealist at all. I thought you'd like him because of his staunch anti-humanism. His fault wasn't idealism, it was painting a picture of Marx as a philosopher and an academic, not a militant. People in western European academia still see Marx that way because of him.

I'm usually not serious about the whole power corrupts thing, especially because the formulation of the slogan is shit. Both words are so loaded that without reference they mean nothing. Power in this context entails a relation to someone else but totally fails to describe the content of such in any meaningful way, and corruption is obviously useless moralism as it describes a deviation from something pure, unadultered. I think this slogan can be rendered in a materialist fashion (or expressed in systemic dialectic which of course has its own problems) in which it begins to makes sense but on its own it is of course a load of BS. But I think that is not specific to the slogan itself but more the point of divergence between idealism and materialism.
