Over coming divisions is something that'll take a lot of work or events that wake the left up and get them realiseing the need for solidarity in order to bring about change. Maybe theres a chance events in Nepal and India escalating will provide this oppurtunity but I'm fairly pessemistic at the moment.

Well Maoism is a branch of Marxism-Leninism. You can't be a Maoist and not be a ''stalinist.'' In my opinion, an objective look at the USSR should bring anyone to Marxism-Leninism, but most seek to discredit Stalin as a Marxist because he most certainly did not present the image most modern Marxists in the west seek to, that is, "libertarian."

So are you becoming a Marxist-Leninist? Stalin was a bastard, but he made the USSR what it was and gave it the chance to be a beacon of freedom against capitalism, imperialism, racism, and wage slavery. Too bad his successors didn't care enough about the working class to take it. Stalin did bad things, but almost everything he did do has been extremely exaggerated, like - \/ - for instance. He had defects, but Stalin was a great Marxist, a great Leninist, and a man of the people.

Fair enough mate, sorry if I came down a bit hard on you, it's quite late and I'm grumpy :P. I just feel quite passionately about some issues that happened post-1924 in the Soviet Union. Having said that, I'm not sure what good can come of the left obsessing over beardy dead men, you know? I think I read somewhere; learning from the past is good, obsessing over it is not.

"Didn't deserve" to be exiled? You're quite right comrade, they all deserved it. Especially Trotsky. He contributed nothing to Marxist theory, nor the Second International, nor the Third, and he certainly did nothing for the 1905 revolution, or the one in 1917 revolution, and he was pathetic as head of the Red Army. Some other names that spring to mind: Zinoviev, Kamenev, Bukharin, Rakovsky, Krestinsky and Rykov all fully deserved arrest and execution. Those Trotskyite bastards.

Yes, I agree if an attack on Stalin, from dumb right-wingers, is also un-wittingly a smear against communist theory on a whole then Stalin can and should be defended in certain circumstances.
