I've just finished writing a 15,000 word piece on Nepal, I'll send it to you once it's proofed and published as part of a pamphlet my group is putting out on the subject :-)

The Maoists won 40% of the seats in the elections. Half the first past the post seats, and a third of the proportional voting ones. In the last by elections in which 6 seats came up, the Maoists started with two and ended with three.

The current prime minister of Nepal, from the revisionist UML party, was beaten twice in the elections, both times by Maoist candidates.

When the war began, the Maoists were attacking police stations with flintlock muskets. I shit you not. The police and the military had M16s, helicopters, etc etc etc. If the Maoists didn't have mass support, it stands to reason that they relied purely on violence, terror and military means. So I ask you, if that's the case, how did they achieve such military success using flintlocks?

I'll reply in depth in a few days when I'm less busy (remind me if I don't!), but I'll give you this now. The Maoists began with the struggle with no more than a few dozen cadre and one .303 rifle that didn't even work, which they used for training purposes. Prior to this they had taken part in the elections and won in a few dirt poor rural seats like Rolpa, where the People's War began. They won the support of the people politically and only then initiated armed struggle.

And think about this. How does a group with a few dozen cadre and one broken gun manage to grow into a movement involving millions, with hundreds of thousands of militia and tens of thousands of full time cadre and PLA fighters, controlling 80% of the country, if it doesn't have support and just forces people to obey it with guns? Do you really think the people would have sacrificed so much and not just collaborated with the army to defeat the militarily much weaker Maoist forces, if they didn't support them?

Both for the production on a mass scale of this communist consciousness, and for the success of the cause itself, the alteration of men on a mass scale is, necessary, an alteration which can only take place in a practical movement, a revolution; this revolution is necessary, therefore, not only because the ruling class cannot be overthrown in any other way, but also because the class overthrowing it can only in a revolution succeed in ridding itself of all the muck of ages and become fitted to found society anew
