It's simply a play on the famous George Clinton quotation, illustrating Marx's materialism (as opposed to Clinton's apparent idealism). Seems obvious enough to me.

As to your comments: 1) Marx isn't saying that a freed ass implies a freed mind, but that ideas stem from material reality (as opposed to the reverse; see links); moreover, a freed mind doesn't imply a freed ass, either; 2) since you seem to understand that landing a high-paying job under capitalism in no way liberates one from its shackles, I don't understand why you raise it as an example of an ass-freeing move.

As to my druthers, I'd rather be free at both ends, thankyouverymuch.
