man, that guy. i am still uncertain why exactly it is such a terrible hardship to be called racist or sexist (or have your attitudes labeled rightly as such). it takes about a fraction of a second and then it is over. meanwhile, racism and sexism continues oppressing the rest of us unabated. i will never know the heart-wrenching pain of being accused of misogyny, i guess, so maybe i shouldn't devalue his experience! feminists are such meanies.

are you muslim, or is your friend? i'd be interested to hear your ideas about religion in communism, it's not something i've thought or read much about. there seems to be some theory around communism in a mono-religious society (for lack of a better term) but not a multicultural one. i'm interested in the role of cultures (little c) in communism in general.

i dont think so? i feel like i've seen some self-identified christian socialists. i'm new here, so idk the policy. i certainly hope not.

i think a lot of what marx was critiquing is that lack of separation, which like you say did exist in the west in his time (for some christian groups, anyhow), which he thought prevented people from viewing their existence in material terms and might inhibit economic and political struggle- i think we've seen since then that this is not the case at all.

i'm a former jew so my rejection of religion is personal; i incorporate it into my marxism and feminism but there's plenty of good theory that doesnt. i agree that it's pretty much impossible given our history for westerners to 'benignly' comment on the value of non-western religion.

yeah i think the historical materialist method requires the rejection of theism, but that's a question of theory, not practice. to condemn people who are religious alongside the idea of religion, especially without any examination of orientalist colonial history (hint hint this has to do with capitalism too!) is just ignorant, and like you said it can all to often veil racist attitudes. i'd much rather hang out and organize with muslim feminists and liberation theologists than 'new atheist' bozos.

I agree, but I've seen so man threads derailed by some male comrades without action being taken. Last year, some men were even defending street harassment and nothing was done for quite awhile.

I agree, it's a problem on the Left in general, and RevLevt is just a microcosm of that. It's frustrating, though. For all the revolutionary talk, some male comrades have a blind spot where women are involved, and they're not willing to examine their own beliefs.

You'll find that that there's a frequent issue in Women's Struggle of some male comrades throwing around their privilege and raging about feminism.
