Also, sorry to hear about the chat group. I decided to end my participation in it because the arguments were getting repetitive (as were the insults). I'll consider rejoining, but if it's anything like the last chat I won't stay long. My involvement will probably be slightly more minimal anyway, what with my research and all. Invite me on aim, or however you add someone to a chat group.

This kinda means I'm not as active politically, at least atm. I resigned from Branch Committee, and have generally taken on a smaller role in the branch in proportion to my increased workload. Our branch is putting out a 'zine, though, which is sort of cool. We hope it'll be something that non-members can contribute to. We also had nearly 40 people at our launch meeting for the semester, and met some comrades who're interested in working with us and learning more about the ISO.

As for contacts in NYC, don't you still have that comrade's email from awhile back? I guess I could ask if folks know of anyone else to get in contact with, but that's all I know of for now.

I'm writing about the 1933 agricultural workers' strike in California. It was 'led' by the Cannery and Agricultural Workers' Industrial Union - how's that for a mouthful - an affiliate of the U.S. Communist Party. It was one of the few successful strikes spearheaded by the union (with modest pay increases) and the largest statewide strike in California history with upwards of 40,000 ag. workers (don't know if it still is). Afterwards, the union's leaders and main organizers were rounded up, put on trial, and imprisoned. To add insult to injury, the Comintern then entered into its "Popular Front" phase and ordered all independent 'Red' organizations to dissolve into coalitions with liberals and other anti-fascist groups, thus ending the CAWIU by 1935-36.

It's fascinating stuff - I just got back from the library where I was going through some of the union's old newspapers (called "bulletins"). Got some great quotes.

Yo, yo. That Welshy dude was not a very person it seems. Why did he bully Old Remus? Thanks for the add. I can't guarantee I will have time to hang out on it though. I could just have it open in the bank ground and dip in a out. I'm crazy busy

Not much, keeping busy. Working on my thesis this semester, so most of my time will revolve around that. You?

Men vanish from earth leaving behind them the furrows they have ploughed. I see the furrow Lenin left sown with the unshatterable seed of a new life for mankind, and cast deep below the rolling tides of storm and lightning, mighty crops for the ages to reap.
~Helen Keller
To despise the enemy strategically is an elementary requirement for a revolutionary. Without the courage to despise the enemy and without daring to win, it will be simply impossible to make revolution and wage a people’s war, let alone to achieve victory. ~Lin Biao
