What "pro-imperialist" positions are you being accused of? If you opposed some anti-colonial struggle, you should look into Orthodox Marxist condemnations of "imperialist economism." That whole post-WWII period of anti-colonial struggles is something worth supporting, even if the countries ended up being economically worse off.

In the 1960's it actually did have a sound basis of sorts in the West. In the first place, until 1966 China was basically seen abroad as continuing the work of Lenin and Stalin in struggle against revisionism. Albania was seen as allied to China in this regard. Thus practically every anti-revisionist organization was pro-China.

After 1966, when the "Cultural Revolution" began, most anti-revisionist parties supported it (with few exceptions, e.g. PLP). A number of progressive organizations, such as the Black Panthers, also were influenced by Maoism. But after 1972 Western Maoism entered a continuous decline. By 1990 the RCPUSA was the only "orthodox" Maoist party, and by that point it was already building up a "culture of appreciation" around Chairman Bob Avakian.
