However, the term was appropriated by Marxists to describe self-described socialists who were seen by Marxists as on the side of the ruling class; all non-Marxists considering themselves socialists , whether they identified with the label or not. If you think we call us MLs to trick other leftists, no, "Stalinist" is a term coined by Trotsky and later broadly used by "anti-Stalinists" of all ideological colours. There is no "Stalinism" just as there is no "Engelsism". If somebody calls him/herself Stalinist its usually for reasons of joke, provocation or displaying solidarity.

If you want to say that we engage in self-delusion, also no. In capitalist society we are faced with tons of most vicious lies about communism in general. Obviously you didn't blindly believe them, used your own brain, researched for yourself and arrived at the conclusion that communism is not as bad as we are always told. If you get only ridiculous "facts" by some moronic apologists you can forget about the whole issue but if you get real facts, making much more sense than all the emotional horror stories ever made, you'll reconsider your previous views about communism. Same goes for Stalin.
