If the man was using the word 'girl' to refer to an adult woman he doesn't know, it was sexist. Why else would he do that if he didn't harbour some unconscious attitudes about the nature of women in a patriarchal society? That doesn't mean it was intentional, but if we understand sexism as being that which reinforces or legitimises patriarchy, then that is what it is. Let's also remember the fact he mentioned women being punched in isolation. Why would he do that? Why is it more shocking for a woman to be punched than a man? Or for that matter a girl or a boy?

Ultimately, I don't really understand the nature of your disagreement. You say you agree with me, but then try and paint this picture as if there is some kind of confusion. It's quite simple: Don't refer to adult women as children (I would say ever, but apparently that's too difficult). Why? Because it infantilises them, presents them as weak and ineffective and reinforces patriarchy.

I think you should re-read my actual post. I didn't make any assumptions about anything.

I associate the word girl with women because it is a term used by men to describe them, and it forms part of a structural system of oppression against women when men refer to them as children. I don't expect you to understand that, but it is nevertheless a fact.

I am told by women that using the term girl is offensive, derogatory and misogynistic, so I don't use it, and as an ally to women against patriarchy I make it my responsibility as a man to question other men when they do it. I don't understand why you would find that problematic.
