The problem with historical applications of communism is twofold in nature.
1) The world is pretty damn reactionary and so from its inception the revolution will be attacked from without by hostile forces, this leads to-
2) Revolutionary governments tend to fossilise at the revolutionary stage as a result of 1) and also as a result of the crapness of human nature - if you are a revolutionary your whole raison d'etre is that of being part of a revolution. Whent he revolution is over, what do you do next?
This is why revolutions eat their children. This is why communism has indeed been a failure in its application but the end goal of communism is not a bad thing per se.
It is for this reason that I maintain the true and most sincere revolutionary does not call himself or herself a revolutionary.
