PS- Just as a note to below, it was cunning use of Norman cavalry that won the Battle of Hastings, 1066.

As for viking weapons, they mostly used spears and axes. All battle-axes were one-bladed (two-bladed battle axes are as real as three-metre tall barbarians in loincloth who are sitting on thrones surrounded by chained bisexual blonde female slaves in transparent silk gowns). In that sense, they reminded a bit of the Saxons, though vikings seldom used cavalry (which hampered their mobility on land and meant that they were dependent on their boats).

The vikings were not particularly militarily successful. Moreover, the vikings cannot be seen as one faction, but every raid or invasion or war has to be seen in it's own context. The main reason for viking military success was the longboat, which allowed them to both cross open sea and to enter narrow rivers, so they not only could disembark on the coasts, but also deep inside enemy territory. They relied heavily on surprise and what we would call hit'n'run operations.

Viking raids were relatively unusual though, and the vikings more often came as mercenaries, traders and settlers.

What region are you focusing on?

The British isles? France? The Mediterranean? Russia? Iceland, Greenland and America?

You should look up Daniel Everett; he studied the Piraha language and people of Brazil...and these people were offered free food, free training in farming, free education...and since the tribe has no leaders, they turned it down. also, the sentinelese Islanders. they constantly denied contact, technology, and outside influence.

oh, and I agree that Marx was a materialist, just not a dialectical materialist a la Hegel.
