Well it's never too late to learn!!! But yeah, I know this story about a girl who visited her grandmother's village in Sicily but she only knew how to speak her grandmother's dialect that only the old people knew- she couldn't speak Italian and they couldn't understand her!!! The dialects are still strong but they are slowly giving way to Italian or versions of it. Of course Italian is just a dialect in a sense, but from Florence.

Good... if you have a problem with the Italian, well, you know where to ask!

I guess your wife speaks more dialect than standard Italian... it's a problem for a lot of Italian-Americans.
