I was a Stalinist mainly because I didn't know what Socialism was. I had a hard-on for authoritarian social democracy (or friendly fascism, as I like to call it). I am still authoritarian, but now firmly in the revolutionary camp--now that I know what is what. My opinions largely line up with those of Anarchists, it seems, though I've not read any anarchist literature EXCEPT, WHEN I WAS A STALINIST, Murray Bookchin's essay on lifestylism, which I thought was great then (and probably still would if I could be arsed to re-read anything).
