I was a warrant officer in the Army, got out last year. And we're till trying to use conventional methods to fight irregular forces. Using light infantry and SF doesn't secure a win. You have to cause a civil war, and like we did in Afghanistan against the Soviets, dress up like the indigenous, and fight along side them, without being caught. It's impossible for a conventional force to topple a non-conventional force. Unless you plan on killing everyone.

The Vietnamese had no strategy, and we left because we were over there for a long ass time, and we wouldn't win politically. We destroyed them militarily, but lost politically. The same goes for Iraq and Afghanistan. Spain couldn't contend to the bombardment of the Axis war machines. Can't fight a war without bullets!

Indeed it did. In fact, I would like to think they'd destroy the Republicans one the fascists were overthrown. But Stalin killed the revolution, only supplying the 5th Stalinist Regiment. In addition, the west should have supported the Anarchist. Since they didn't Nazi Germany had allies all over southern Europe, plus they would have prevented WWII by destroying the Italian and Nazi armies.
