In a Marxist definition we wouldn't look at it as a seperate class. It is just people who are fairly "well-off" so they are neither rich nor poor. Most of the population doesn't look at it as a bad thing to be called. In fact, most Americans associate themselves as "middle class" even if they aren't.

For some people it is used as a demeaning word though. The sterotype for a middle class person is kind of like a self-centered, libertarian, mildly racist, asshole that is disconnected from the "real world".

But yeah, in Marxist definition it would not form a seperate class. It is based off of income not relation to means of production.
